I'm enjoying Joe's new album alot. It's very eclectic in scope, and he goes between acoustic tunes and electric. He gets good tone on all his instruments (pedal steel, lap steel, Dobro, National, etc.), and the accompaniment is very complimentary (thankfully no drum machines). I prefer his electric tunes, like Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." Joe also dips into the Beatles catalogue, as I love to do also, and does interesting versions of "Come Together and "Yesterday"(nice harmonies on this one). Most of the other tunes are interesting originals done in many musical styles.

Hey Joe. Thanks for the review. I completely missed this until you mentioned it in the other thread. I had a ball doing Come Together. Used an old leather suitcase for the tom rolls and a my kithen sink rig for the other percussion. I used all "real" instruments on every song. No tracks, loops or samples...... I appreciated your advice early on, and appreciate your input now.

the Al Green song is a great song. I jumped up when I heard the intro on your CD. you guys are outstanding on this ...and the Beatles covers. you do them well.
but let's not forget about the originals. you introduce new voices with the varied instruments you bring together. you have a knack for that.
also, I believe you have a gift for choosing the right note, tone, feel, and instrument for any of the songs on the CD.
the waltz is one of my favs. no wait, that chicken song is great,...no wait...the coffee perking...the details in a song matter and you pay close attention to them. |

Just the other day I was wondering when the CD was coming out. I just ordered one, so I look forward to hearing it. Colette and I still get comments about your playing at our wedding. Not a bad comment in the bunch.

I just got this. It's great! A real variety of musical styles, including some folksy tongue-in-cheek stuff. No computer-generated stuff, but lots of acoustic overdubbing. Pedal steel, lap steel, dobro, all kinds of percussion, and even a horn section on a couple of tunes. On one song, Joe plays the "kitchen sink". Way cool!

I just got this and am blown away by how good it is. The styles range from Dixieland to Hawaiian to Irish, to old-timey to funk to rock, with elements of one genre popping up in the others. And besides playing pedal and lap steels, Dobro, and national Steel body, the3 CD also features bagpipes, jaw harp, saw, and even clawhammer banjo (the good kind of banjo playing.)
But what makes this CD so wonderful is that Joe plays with great passion. We often hear the phrase that somebody plays ad sings from the heart. Joe really does.
This one's going to be in the CD changer in my car for a very long time.
