Hi-

I have a U.K. club tour to play (w/Teddy Thompson) from the 17th through the 28th, and management is balking at shipping my steel. It's an old Sho-Bud ProIII Custom, so it's really heavy- probably 100 lbs in a Cushcase. John Widgren suggested I post here, so here goes...

Can anyone in the London area rent me a steel? What I need is an E9th with 4 knees (no C6th needed) and a straight Emmons copedant setup. There would be no flying involved, so no flight case is needed. And I'm sure the tour can pay a decent rental fee, anything will be cheaper than Rock-It Cargo!

Dear Friends,

For those of you who may not know, David is a tremendous talent, and a totally nice guy. I recently did some tech work on his Bud, and it's a beauty, but HEAVY! I believe he would treat anyones gear with great care. It's just a shame about all the difficulties of traveling with a steel...

Sorry I don't live in the UK, but good luck David. I've seen a couple of posts from you in the last few months or so, and wondered if you are the fine guitar player on T-Bone Burnette's "Truth Decay" LP...Jerry

David, John Davis may be able to get you something close to your Sho-Bud but you are welcome to borrow my MSA Classic S-10 if you are stuck. Let me know if you want more details. Jonathan.

Yep, T-Bone and I had a band called The Alpha Band in the 70s, and I backed him on a lot of his solo stuff after that

Hi David
I lifted a few things from your playing on that record. Used to play your solo from "Drivin' Wheel". Nice to know your still gigging...Jerry

Driving Wheel is the only one that's not me! That's Gerry McGee, whose sandals I'm not worthy to untie.

David Hartley (on the forum here too) is certainly a great player, and may have an idea for you.

David,

I think we met and maybe even played an impromtu gig together in Ft. Worth TX maybe 25 years ago (at least) with my dear friend Stephen Bruton. I grew up in FTW and have spent the last 30 years on the road. I know we share at least a few musical friends and acquaintances. Your Alpha band and T-Bone work were a big influence on me. I don't post much here but saw your name and had to chime in. I wish you luck in finding a steel in the UK.

Yes, we sure do share a lot of friends. Was that gig when Bruton and Glen Clark had Little Whisper & The Rumors? I remember we (Alpha Band) once did a double bill with them at some old ballroom, and I think the Legendary Stardust Cowboy played as well... talk about dating oneself...

Not quite as far back as Little Whisper but...that does date us doesn't it! I think you were in town for something else and I was rehearsing with Stephen for a show at the Scott Theater and you dropped by and we met. Maybe we went out and sat in somewhere that night. I seem to remember something like that but not sure. It was too long ago! But I do remember the Alpha Band/Little Whisper show. It was at the "Guys & Dolls Ballroom!"

Anyway, sorry to hijack this thread.

Back to searching for a UK steel!

Just wanted to thank everybody for the generous offers of help. The perfect solution hasn't appeared, so we're going to ship my steel today via Fedex, which, it turns out, is much more affordable than Rock-It Cargo.

Cheers,
David
