Hello

Thanks to you guys I'll be getting my first lap steel shortly. I've been playing standard guitar for years and am a proud owner of a Bourgeois Custom Slope D.

Along with being a fan of Greg Liesz (Thanks to Matthew Sweet and Chuck Prophet) and a few other steel and pedal steel players, I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting and listening to Sally Van Meter at a Bluegrass workshop a few years ago, she made me almost cry with a beautiful piece where the guitarist was playing DADGAD (I have it somewhere on Minidisc I'll have to load it up and share)

I've pretty much made my mind up on an Fouke Industrial lap steel (probably an 8 string Bent Rail) as unlike over the other side of the pond there aren't that many options over here for lapsteels new or used. I've just got to decide on pickup(s)

I've already lost hours and hours searching and reading the awesome amount of knowledge and advice on here, so hopefully any questions I ask won't be the normal newbie questions that are asked over and over (I know how annoying that can be)

anyway I'll stop rambling now

Matt

Welcome Matt, it's much more enjoyable being a member than a viewer. I've read a lot of good things about the Foukes so I'm sure you'll make good use of it.

Edward I'd like to congratulate you, you are truely the first person to use my first name in a pun rather than my surname. It must have taken a great deal of restraint Laughing

No Problem Matt, I thought the pun didn't need elaborating being as you are in the Land of Saints and Scholars, you've already partially admitted to not being the former so the latter MUST apply. Therefore my presumption was as stated..

I maybe in The land of saints and Scholars but I'm also in the place known as 'The city of pubs', I think this certainly takes precedent.

Welcome Matt. Regarding Fouke Industrial Lap Steels, I own three and couldn't be happier. Chris not only makes a great instrument, he's a customer-oriented guy, too. I have an Indy Rail, and Indy Rail with a coil splitter, and a Baritone.

Good luck!

...and it was in one of those pubs that two fellars were talking.
"Have you seen O'Reilly lately ? He used to be in here every night, knocking them back like nobody's business, but I haven't seen him in weeks."
"Well, it's like this," replied the second fellar, "He was in here sulking, saying that he was suicidal, that his life had no meaning, that it was all over for him."
"Get away ! What did you tell him ?"
"I told him to go see Father O'Brien"
"Then what happened ?"
"Well he went to see Father O'Brien, and the Father told him not to be distressed, that God in his wisdom has a role for us all to play in this life, but you must look out for His message when it comes, because it could turn up in the most unlikely place, so you keep your eyes open."
"What happened then ?"
"He walked out of the church, and came up to an advertising hoarding which read DRINK CANADA DRY. That was five weeks ago, and no-one has seen hide not hair of the man since..."
