Topic: Introduction/New CD Featuring Lap-Steel and Baritone Guitar |

Hello,
I wanted to introduce myself and let you know about a new recording I just released featuring fellow Twin Cities guitarist Ben Woolman on acoustic baritone guitar and myself on acoustic lap-steel. We go by New Roots Duo. The new record is a collection of "instrumental, roots based, melody driven pop music". I would welcome any feedback.
While I have been playing finger-style guitar for quite a while now, I am pretty new to lap-steel. I have come across some great music and interesting advice from many of you the past couple years I have been checking in. I appreciate this forum. I am happy to join you with my first post.

Let me be the first to say that I know Dan and can attest to his fine playing. The new CD is very enjoyable and would appeal anyone who loves well played, creative new music regardless of genre preference.

Hi Dan, that was beautiful! Thanks for sharing your music with us. What a great combination the acoustic steel and acoustic baritone guitar make.
"First Waltz" particularly grabbed my ear, with the interplay between both instruments. Is it all arranged, or is there a degree of improvisation?
It doesn't appear to be a resonator guitar you are playing in your photo, what is it?
Well done, i'm sure your album will be well received.

Joe, Thanks very much. It was rather comforting seeing you as the first reply - I'm among friends! I can't wait to get my hands on your record.
Dean, The record, and our shows on a whole vary quite a bit between tightly arranged, to what we like to call "Free Folk" improvisation. "First Waltz" is kind of loose - we are thinking chords with a flexible melody. The last "A" of the tune is harmonized, so that stays put.
Brad, I am playing an old student model Oahu in open D for the whole record.

That's great sounding stuff. If you're ever looking to head down to play in Chicago, there's a nice venue called Uncommon Ground that probably would be great for you guys. I've played there many times, but I'm just an instrumentalist who accompanies some singer-songwriters, so I have no pull with them. But I just wanted to let you know about the place.
Very small room with a soundman, nice neighborhood folks comin' in for dinner/coffee/cocktails, usually attentive and responsive. The website is kinda slow, but you'll find all the info you need there. I'm referring to the Clark St location. I have not yet played or even been to the new location on Devon.
Just wanted to give a fellow midwesterner a heads-up. Welcome to the SGF!

Dan, welcome to the forum.
I LOVE your music and I sure couldn't tell that you're new to lap steel. The baritone sounds awesome and compliments the steel nicely and the recording is fantastic. Great job.
I'm also new to lap steel but you're farther along than I am. What really interests me about your music is that what you're doing is very close to the direction that I'm leaning towards. The acoustic stuff that I've been working on is in the ballpark of "Long Night" and "blues for Buddy."
I'm already a fan.

Chris, I appreciate your info on Uncommon Ground. We are working hard on getting in there. Sounds like a great place. Can I give you a holler when we are coming in to Chicago? It would be nice to get the nerves riled up knowing there is another steel player in the house.
