It's my understanding that Fender Double 8s with pedals are 1000s.
Double 10s with pedals are 2000s.
The 400s, 800s, 1000s & 2000s are all fairly similar and are cable driven guitars.
Later, you have the Sho-Bud made Fenders and then they have several designations...I believe. They have the more modern mechanics in them too!!!
Perhaps some expert like Jody Carver or Jim Sliff can add more info or more specific technical info.

What Casey said. All Fender double eight pedal steels are 1000's. Serial numbers are generally not much help, but the assembler at the Fender factory would usually write the date underneath the tuning pan. Unscrew and remove the tuning pan on the upper neck - the one furthest from the player. The date of assembly should be written in pencil in the empty cavity. |

A '62 or earlier guitar (if it's original) would be a long-scale, non-sunburst guitar with a solid-rod bridge, and no roller nut. Serial number would likely be 00XXX, or possibly 0XXXX. |

The roller nuts were all aftermarket add-ons - they didn't come from the factory that way. It was Fender's way of dealing with modern tunings and string issues until the short-scale came about in late '63.
As Donny noted, the serial numbers are only "grouped" - there's no identifiable sequence. If the date is not written under the tuner pan the best you can do is get within a few years based on the guitar's features. Dating potentiometers is useless as Fender bought them in bulk and used them up over a period of years.
If you can post pics of the top, bottom and pedals that will help us pin down the type of 1000 and a general date range. Written descriptions are almost always missing a key detail or two. _________________ No chops, but great tone
