I saw several cuts on You Tube by Dave and John Stannard, can these guys be the real deal? I was more than impressed with all of the cuts.

Yeah Larry,, he's scary... Kinda west coast style steel on steroids and hyper drive.. He uses many of the same licks I use except 3 times as fast, 5 times as clean and he knows 20 times as many... lol...
He is incredible.. and that John guy is a fantastic player as well.. It is a little humbling watching videos on YT sometimes...bob

Larry he's the real deal alright. I sit side by side with him two years ago at the Texas Show and jamed all weekend. He was there to pick up the new Rains, that was the first Gun Metal Gray body I built for Rains. I think he might be coming to Dallas again in 2008.

Going off topic. Ashoken Farewell is indeed a beautiful tune. Jay gives a short history of it here:

Many years ago in the Old Country I was doing some casual gigging with a band in the East Anglia area on steel. One day I got a call from their singer, saying that he couldn't find a guitar-player for that night. He could, however, find another steel-player, so would I oblige by switching to Telecaster for the gig?

I was content to say yes - a gig's a gig, right?

Anyway, David was the steel-player who turned up, and he blew me away! I told the guys that they could make that switch anytime they wanted. I had fun on electric for the night, and I got to hear some of the best steel-playing I'd heard east of Newfoundland (or anywhere, come to that)!

Anyway - just an endorsement; I think he's terrific!

In my opinion, the Raines is the only problem with that video. I think a Rains sounds like a $2 transistor radio.
Just my opinion !! Oh Well Oh Well Laughing

I figured I would rattle someone's chain. I just don't like the sound of a Rains. David is a great player no matter what he plays. Let him do the same video with my HWP and you would all agree with me.
Just my opinion. Very Happy

Bill, got to disagree on this one... I ordered the CD and it's now one of my favorites. The tone; the choice of songs and the arrangements all make for an amazing piece of steel guitar artistry. I just feel great when I listen to each song. This man adds a fresh feel to the steel scene. I can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve next. Very Happy

In fact, I am pretty sure I will be able to talk my wife into going to Dallas this year if David is able to make it for their show. I'm sure I won't be the only one positioning for a front row seat. Very Happy

David Hartley is awesome. He doesn't put me to sleep listening to him like some steelers do. He gets in to what he's plays. And I like his style as well. I just bought his rythm tracks off ebay. He is selling his album along with the ryhthm tracks for all of those songs on you-tube. If you like his playing, you definately need to get it. They are real authentic rhythm tracks that he actually uses on his own recording.

I don't know about Rains guitars but it sounds good to me. And you cant just judge the tone of a guitar by listening to it through a raw video recording such as a youtube video.

But I will say that he could probrably make any guitar sound good.

Victor , Ashokan,is located in the Town of Olive,in the Catskill mountains,Olive is part of the resevoir system for NYC & I live a couple of Miles above above it, my little village is one of the few that were left intact, when Olive was destroyed ,for Water For a City,a very good book.I believe Ashokan farewell was written for the Civil war documentary a few yrs back.It was performed by Molly Mason & Jay Unger ,who run a sort of fiddlers camp/school just below it. I thought they were the composers , but,I am easily confused .Ashokan is an Indian/native American, word, we also have Shokan & West Shokan , This is Beautiful Country, I'll stop with the history , lot,s of early settlers came up the Hudson & decided to stay , despite the danger.BTW the session work on Someday Soon, by Judy Collins features some beautiful interplay, check the credits on that one, Billy Lee Fraser
