Okay. For you guys (and gals) that curl the the right hand pinky finger under, what do you do with the ring finger? Out straight or curled under? When I bend either of my pinkys down, the ring finger also curls. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

Either I'm right, or there is a sinister conspiracy to conceal the fact that I'm right.

I put a pick on the RH ring finger. Yes my pinky curls under, and I often curl the ring finger under (with the pick on it). I don't use the RH ring finger all the time.
I do this because I play 12 strings. I can reach low notes with my thumb, and still have three finger picks for the upper strings.
hope this adds something.

If I put a 3rd pick on the ring finger I'm ok. If I play without "Ringy Boy" wants to join his long time friend "Pinky Boy" and curl right along beside him.

Usually curled tight into my palm unless I am picking with my hand open. Then it just sticks out like the pinky. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Buddy Emmons told me to curl my ring finger under and leave the pinky out. It took me a full year to get into the habit. Your ring finger is a natural blocker when formed like this. I know you folks will come back and tell me the edge of my palm is also, so all I can say is if Buddy says so, it's good enough for me. Larry _________________ U12 Williams keyless 400

I guess I'm weird in that my right hand flots a lot of the time over the strings when picking, and my pinkie is semi curled. My right hand is all over the place and up and down the neck to get whatever tone I need at the moment.
Thanx,
Jim |

IMO, the best thing to do is learn to play with the fingers in the different positions as I stated in the other post on this topic. Each position is just another tool in your arsenal. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Larry- I curl my pinky and ring finger under. It may depend some on length and width of individuals fingers. Mine are small. It relaxes my hand and muscles clear up my arm to curl under. I also use the curled fingers for muting some. |

I grind the skin off the tops of anything that's curled under - I guess I just get too excited or something. :headbang: |

Buddy Emmons curls his ring finger out and hold his pinky out. I absolutley love the choked, spitty blocking that he sometimes does with his ring finger using this hand position. I have tried to do that for years and I just can't get there. Paul Franklin curls both ring and pinky under. I don't think that anyone would argue with his right hand technique being beyond superb. If I were just starting out, I'd think seriously about emulating the Big E. right hand position.
