Anyone tried a True-tone in a Sho-Bud? (Besides Eric, who I recall found it a bit mid-heavy)...

I have Wallace True-tones in my Pro III.
17.5K on my E9 and around 20K the C6. I like them very much.

I had Jerry rewind the pickups that came in my Super Pro. They are far better than anything I have had in it.

I have TrueTones in a Pro III. It sounds very similar to my Zum and MSA M3 with TrueTones. Most modern steels have converged to a similar tonal capability, and matching a pickup to a guitar is not that big a deal. With some of the older instruments and their unique tonal properties, maybe it is worth experimenting with a few pickups to see what works best with it. But with the modern ones, most of the difference you would hear is due to the pickup in my experience. A pickup you like will probably have the sound you like it for on almost any modern instrument. And a pickup you don't like, will probably have the sound you don't like on any modern instrument. It's mostly the pickup, not the instrument. But that's just my experience. If anyone has a different experience, I'd like to hear about it.

Yep,
18.6 on the E9
18.2 on the C6
With all due respect to Jerry, I've had 705's that were great in a Sho-Bud also.

Well I didn't find it mid-heavy.

It didn't pick up the middle two strings very well.

Sounded like about 75% of the strength of the other ones. I put in on the C6 neck and it did the same thing.

It was the strangest thing, and I have no idea why it did that.

JW took it back and applied it to two pickups with the smaller Sho~Bud magnets, and they worked like a charm.

Maybe it was a glitch in the windings of that one pickup.

I'll never know.

JW is a real pleasure to do business with.

Ron, SWEET BUD. I thought the narrow mount BL was a 905. Am I wrong?

The BL 705 is a fantastic pickup in a shobud, that is actually being reissued, I've heard, as they were discontinued awhile back. The 705 has two "blades" instead of the row of little round magnets. These 705's are a humbucker that is as close to an original shobud pickup(singlecoil) as you've ever heard.

I have TT's on my Pro 111, and I love them. Equal balance on all strings, and a lack of mid range bias which is important for me.

JW makes a great pickup and is great to deal with.

Marc, in my opinion the TrueTone pickup would be a very good choice for a Sho-Bud. I use them in my Pro-III with satifaction. Leon

I just put the TT's on my Pro II D10 this past weekend and must say, I am totally satisfied. Great tone and sustain. I put the BL710's on the E9th neck of my Super Pro and it too sounded great. I can't really say one is so much better than the other but the TT's were a perfect fit replacement for the ShoBud. I had to retrofit the changer housing a little to accomondate the BL's because they were a little wide than the original opening.

If you want to send me a personal e-mail, ill send them to you. Its not the best quality of video or playing but theres quite a difference in sound.
