Hi again Forumites. I just wanted to remind you about our new c.d. entitled "Still Safe at Home" by the PORCH PICKERS with Neil Flanz which was released on the second week of June of this year. For any of you Gram Parsons fans or those who like the type of music that Gram and several early 70's California groups were trying to do back then, this album is an absolute must! It features several of Gram's songs and also features a couple of Rolling Stones songs along with an Elvis Costello song, some early Jimmie Rodgers material along with some Merle Haggard and some of our original material. Not only is tis project a fitting tribute to Gram Parsons, it's 'Cosmic American soul Music at it's best.
Whether you want to call it country-rock or alterna-country, it's the thing!
Besides, it's Neil Flanz on steel and he's great. |

If anybody out there likes,& remembers,Neil Young,Flying Burrito Bros,Greatful Dead,etc.,then this is the album for you. Neil Flanz can,not only,play trad.country,but his past experience w/ Gram Parsons allows him to "reflect" on this type of music most effectivly. I would call it,"Underground Country".

| This is a CD you won't want to miss. I agree with you Smiley. If you were into the country-rock music of the 70s, this CD is a must have. Neil does a great job on the interpretation of this style of music. Not only does Neil display his knowledge on the country-rock idiom, but he plays his a-- off on the 4/4 honky-tonk shuffles. But then this is Neil Flanz, and you would expect nothing but the best coming from him ! Just finished listening to it all over again. Fine work, Neil! A pleasure to hear you again, after many years. Folks, if you like your country on the raw/rootsy side, definitely check this CD out! My faves are Nickels and dimes (is that C6 or E9, Neil?), Hot Burrito #1, and Still Safe at Home. Hope you guys will start touring soon!

This is a great CD folks.
Every song features Neil Flanzs' steel guitar playing, and the song selection really captures the vibe that got me into playing steel in the first place (country/folk/country-rock, all with steel).
Also, if you don't have a copy of Neils earlier Steel Guitar instrumental alblums, they are great also.
Neils command of the instrument is inspiring.
These alblums were cut in '62 and '64!!!
On these alblums Neil skillfully runs the gammitt from Nashville E9th pedal mashin', to deep C6th chord inversions and clever single note runs, to silky ballads such as Danny Boy, which pretty much captures the Sho-Bud sound in all its raw essance and glory. (I think my favorite cut this week is Red Skin Rag.)
I have these alblums on cassette, and the new CD, and listen to Neils playing regularly in my travels.
One of my favorite things to do is to play my favorite highlites from Neils tape for my pickin' friends. People are blown away by some of Neils endings, and the raw emotion and drive in his improvisational soloing.
(Neil, You need to show me that ending lick on Boot Heal Drag!!!)

BTW,
Neil has been at most of the steel shows that I've attended and he is always glad to talk shop.
His C6th Chord Book has been a great help to me also.
When folks start talkin' music theory over my head, I just smile and nod, then break out Neils book and find several ways to play the chord.

This new c.d. has been in the making for about two years and is really the first chance I've had to record since the Joe Sun albums that I played on back in '80 and '82. It really felt good.
