Here are three pictures I got from Joe Douglas in Arkansas. Joe is a steel picker and reads the forum but is not yet a member. He got these pictures from a retired female singer friend.

Jack S-Can you tell me what make of pedal steel John is playing in the second and third pictures? I can tell he is using a Bigsby tone/volume pedal Smile

Paul,
I met John at the old Sun Studios in Memphis in the 1965/66 time frame and he was playing a guitar he had designed and built. At that time he stated his intentions of building guitars commercially. The guitar appeared to be have a somewhat complex changer. If you notice in the 1965 picture, the guitar does not have a logo. In the 1966 picture there is a logo on the guitar body and pedal board. The two stringmasters in the first picture, were taken to Shot Jackson to be fitted with pedals. Rocky's had three pedals between the left legs. My dad bought it from him in the early 60's. It was my first pedal steel. Boy was I dumb to ever let it get away. I don't know if John's was setup exactly the same way, but I would think that it probably was.

I think the guitar in the 3rd picture is a Hughey Brand, and I believe it is in John's case at the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville.

Those Pictures bring back memories, I grew up in North East Arkansas, The Slim Rhodes Show came on Saturday's, I would watch ole Buttermilk John (as he was know by on that show) play his steel on an old snowy black and white television, He was great back then and he was the first one to get me interested in the pedal steel guitar, He will be sorely missed by all.

Charles,
That would be Mrs Slim Rhodes, the girl on the left(looking at the picture is Sandra (Sandy) Slim's daughter, there were two girls, the other daughter was named Donna. I have seen Donna in a backup group singing on I believe the Ralph Emery show. Donna was a blond, there was also a younger brother Perry K. and if i am not mistaken he was also a singer in the group on the RE show.

Mike

ps Charlie miss understood your post, but this should explain

The pedal steel in the pictures has to be at least a second guitar John built. I have an earlier photo of Rhodes' band and the guitar is blonde birdseye. I remember reading an interview in which he told about the guitar stating that "it was basically a Bigsby copy".

The guitar in the photo above, is the same guitar before the logo, John had at the Sun Studios in Memphis. John was living on Cove Ct. in Memphis at that time.

I think that guitar is the one John used on Conway's "Next In Line". He told about it in a interview in the old Steel Guitar World mag. The article is on Cal Sharp's site.

The one thing I notice in the pictures of the steel is there are no knee levers.

That Dickey Betts album, "Highway Call," was the first time I heard John Hughey and KNEW who he was! Country artists didn't list band members too much, but the rockers listed musicians, photographers, the guy who went to get extra tapes for the Echoplex...
Thanks, Bill. and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

How about a photo from the '70's

This was a promotional cardboard display that featured John and his gear. The common thread in this thread is that John Hughey looked great in any era even in a ruffled shirt and an embroidered vest. And always a winning smile.
