Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Western Steel Jam is Spokane, WA. Hats off to Duane Becker for organizing what was a great event. I counted 15 steels who were accompanied by Duane's Bigsky Band. We also enjoyed the performances of sveral guest musicians and some really great singers. This was my first steel jam and will always be remembered.
The experience only heightened my desire to become a better player. Duane and Tommy D'Arazio both have agreed to assist if we can bring together enough beginning to intermediate lap, pedal and resophonic players to cover the expenses.Playing with a band, learning from experienced pros as well as exchanging with peers just has to be a formula for a great day. We would need about 10 players willing to fork out about $50 each to cover the cost. I have a shop building large enough to hold the event and plenty of parking for campers and motorhomes (no hook-ups) and there is an improved campground nearby on the beautiful Ponderay river. We are located 70 miles NE of Spokane in Laclede, Idaho. Otherwise, we can look at sites in Spokane or Couer d'Alene. I would also like to know if anyone else is interested in Hawaiian music and style. If there is, I will try to get a friend to come over from the Islands. I'm thinking a full day of playing this summer if there is enough interest, my email is atwood@televar.com Let me hear from you.

Bill, I'd attend. I wasn't able to go last weekend due to illness in the family, but my summer is open. Keep us posted.

Bill,

I also made it to the Spokane Jam and was amazed, humbled, and inspired to work harder at learning the steel guitar. I would be concidered a begining lap steel player with pedal intentions (hopefully this summer's job will provide the funds for an S-10 E9). I'm very interested in what you propose to get going this summer and I'd be there if it happens. good luck!

We have 4 players so far. Band and instructors are lined up. To keep the cost down we really need 10 participants. I am preparing a flyer describing the days activities, We need your help, Get the word out. If you know beginning or intermediate steelers not on the Forum, send me an address, I'll get a flyer mailed to them.

This sounds like a great event. There would be no point in attending this year, since I don't even have my psg yet. Can I pay the fee and just come and absorb. If this goes well, could it become an anual event?

Duane Becker from Elk, Washington and Tom D'Arazio, Sandpoint, Idaho have both agreed to play and lead the seminar. Tom has been my friend and coach through the first trying year of learning and I met Duane through The Forum. Duane's band, Big Sky, is who will back us up however, we are still 4 short of signups.

Until we have either 10 sign ups or all have agreed to a higher registration fee, we have delayed setting the date. The flyer is under construction. If we can include you in the group, I see no problem in holding off until late June or early July. I will be getting together with Duane in the next couple of days as we must schedule around the bands gig dates.

Thanks for the response. I was also at the excellent JAM in Spokane. I did not play, but I stayed until the last song was played. Duane did an excellent job with it as well as all of the fine steel players. If the session is late June or early July, yes, by all means sign me up. Thanks for the response. P.S. I would be classified as a beginner. Although I played many years ago, I had quit for about 30 years or more and only recently started getting back into the steel. Roy

I will count on you. I am delighted you can make it.Many years ago, I hunted in your area but it's been a long time sine I've been down there. I met with Duane yesterday and very tenatively we have set the date for Saturday July 7. Seminar starting at 9:00 am. Noon lunch break and the band playing from 1:00 to 4:30 PM. Realizing the we are beginners, I asked Duane to write up the tab for C6th & E9th tunings for the following tunes. Waltz Across Texas (one of my favorites), Bouquet Of Roses and Blue Hawaii.
I will send this to all of the participants and hope we will all practice before coming. It will add to the event if we can really hit these three when we jam. We will probably work with the same tunes in the seminar. We have come a long way and just may hit the goal of 10. Please feel free to call me if you have any further questions. 208 255-1780

This has become a real event, no longer just my dream! We have 7 beginner to intermediate participants and welcome 2 or three more. With the next sign-up the cost per participant will be reduced to $62.50 and if we reach 10 down to $50.
Date: Saturday July 7
Location: Valley Ranch near Sandpoint, Idaho
Seminar and workshop will start 9:00 AM, set-up Friday evening or 8:00 AM Saturday morning.
Lunch will be provided at noon and the Band and Jam will start at 1:00 PM. The band has to leave at 4:30 but any who wish to continue playing will be encouraged to do so.
You can reach me at 208 255-1780 or on email. We are preparing tab for the seminar and jam and expect to have it available next week.
Thanks to all who have responded and for the encouragement.

Thanks for the response, now all I will need is directions. I will be home by the 14th of this month, so the 7th of July sounds great to me. Really looking forward to this. By the way, I gave you my address wrong, but the mail will still get to me. It should be 59749 River Canyon Road.

Roy, thanks for correcting the address. I have your envelope all made out and was going to send you the tab today but there was an error when we copied it and the first three strings on all the tab was cut off. My wife will recopy it all tomorrow and it will get in the mail. I'll include the travel instuctions however, you might give me a call to go over them. Will you be coming over on Friday? I got a little too excited and just ordered a new S-10. My wife says we might have a hanging in honor of this event!
I just have to go up to Canada to try and catch some salmon for our lunch and will be gone from June 20 to the 27th.

Roy, when you arrive in the area why don't you drive on up and take a look at the space I have available. We can run a temporary power cord to your unit if you can get buy with a 20 amp circuit. We hope your wife will join us for the day. We have 3 dogs, not at all viscious but very protective. They are Springers, not big or aggressive.

Received the tab.....???....Room Full of Roses or Boquet of Roses? Still planning on arriving on Friday evening. I would only need electricity if it is hot, otherwise I am self contained. That is the reason for the RV park.
