Howdy, was wondering if there are any clubs in the D.C. Maryland, Virginia area that cater to country groups with Steel Players? I used play quite a bit in D.C. but currently live in L.A.

I hope someone currently living in the DC area will respond... I moved away almost 10 years ago and things have changed dramatically in that time.

The Honky Tonk scene was diminishing at that time; I can't imagine there are too many of the venues I used to play C&W at are even still in existence. Gary Lee Gimble could probably tell you ...

Fortunately LTH (while not strictly country) has both a "following", bookings, and the inclination to use my skills. Unfortunately most of the gigs for me are a three hour drive.

Billy, there are many VFW's, Moose Lodges and Nights of Pitheaus (spelling) that feature Country and during the summer there are countless carnivals and Fair events. Only a hand full of honky tonks, most of which require a pain in the rear commute, are still in business. One of the nicest rooms is at the Charles Town Race Track; located in West Virginia. No dance floor there, just a bunch of tables and chairs to accommodate listeners. A few concert rooms exist like the Birchmere, The Virginian State Theater and there are few larger auditoriums, but Country is not always the main attraction. There are many piano rooms around the DC area and as I increase my inventory of cocktail tunes, I hope to be booked playing my favorite ditties. Meanwhile, here is the web address to my band, www.jayhenley.com. Check out our appearance schedule and come visit.
