I'm visiting Hawaii in December. Does anyone have recommendations on any steel players I should seek out and and hear while there? Any forgotten legends or unknown must-sees?

December is not the best time for steel in Hawaii, but this should get you started - www.hwnsge.5u.com

Bobby Ingano and Ron Kanahele are tops on my list for many reasons, and never fail to please.

Oahu will be your best shot at what you're looking for. The other islands are a tuff call, but Ken Emerson on Kauai is a must see. www.kenemerson.com

Enjoy your stay, Michael!

Thanks Ron, that's what I'm looking for. I was thinking Oahu/Waikiki, but we're going to Kauai too so I'll try and catch Ken.

Michael,
The Halekulani hotel on Waikiki has a great outdoor patio on the beach called "The House Without a Key" . All are welcome and you can have drinks or snacks and see great Hawaiian music every night. Every band I saw there had a steel player.

I was told by one of the steelers that every Sunday night there was a jam at Honey's the restraunt/bar at the Ko'olau Golf Club with some of the best players on the island. It is a trek though:
45-550 Kionaole Road Kaneohe HI 96744. This was in Oct. 2005 so I can't speak for now.

Best of luck finding music.
Jamie
