Buddy asked me to post this for him. Just to set the record as to what the Excel is, and other gear questions that have been popping up.
Buddy’s Gear
Ah, a few steelers have written me about my setup since the last concert in Edmonton, AB…seems like I should clear a few things up. A string was posted on the Steel Guitar Forum which had a few things right, a couple wrong. So – I’ll send this to my sidekick JB Arnold ‘cause he posts on the SGF from time to time.
I will be using an Excel Superb on the next NRPS’ tour [see: www.thenewriders.com ] I asked Mitsuo Fujii for more than was reasonable but he came thru amazingly. The best piece of engineering I’ve ever seen. Scotty brokered the whole thing.
The steel is an E9/B6 Uni, single-neck, keyless 14 stringer w/10 on the floor and 13 under.
The sound re-enforcement is a Dan Healy-mod, Fender Silverface Twin, cut down to just the chassis as all Grateful Dead, Wall-Of-Sound Twins were. This is run thru a Hard Trucker’s (Wall of Sound) open-back speaker cab with 2 – 12” JBLs. For larger gigs, I can add another HT cab, banana plugged.
[at the Edmonton gig, they could only come up with a Fender DeVille – I was pissed]
Yeah, I still use a Boss Tone – 2 FX floor panels. One is a Boss GT-6 Synth unit; the other houses a few analog tricks. An MXR Phase 100, a Boss DD-6, and another screamer.

Cool...looking forward to seeing Buddy, David and the boys in a couple of weeks at the Aladdin Theater here in Portland.

That's a lot of activity underneath. That would sober anyone up quick enough.

Last time they came up through here in Bellingham at the Wild Buffalo, Buddy and I chatted it up right through his entire break and told me to stick around til after the show so we can continue to talk shop and hang out. I was absolutely thrilled! Unfortunately my girlfriend kept looking at her phone (cell phones seemed to have replaced watches... hint, hint... it's late, time to go...) and was upset that I wasn't talking to her ("ignoring her") over the LOUD music, during the show, and that I paid more attention to Buddy than her... during the performance.
So we ended up leaving at around midnight, before the show was over and driving back home.
Never got to hang out with Buddy after the show... And I'll never let that happen to me again!
Pops, looking forward to hanging out with you and others that really have a passion about this great music!

JB, it good to see you posting. You've been WAY TOO SCARCE on the Forum.
Shortly after Buddy had his Hilt guitar stolen, there were hints on the Forum about his interest in a "Uni" and possibly a 14-stringer. Since, at that time, I was playing a Sierra S14 "Stafford Elegante" uni. with 8p/7k, I decided to call Buddy and chat about his thoughts on the universal tuning and in particular, a 14-stringer. I figured I'd offer my impression of that kind of beast. As it turned out, at that time, and contridictory to the rumors, he wasn't seriously entertaining the idea of playing a 14-string "uni". It was because of this interesting question he had for me: "Doesn't the changer axel stress and cause a pitch drop, because of it's length?" Asked in comparison to the changer axel length on a 10 or 12-stringer. I told Buddy, I didn't notice any unfavorable characteristics relating to that. I also said my answer had to be qualified since I'm not a technical guru and my ears may not be as good as other pickers.
Anyhow, JB, the next time you talk with Buddy, ask him what his experience has been in that regard. And tell him a long-time fan in Texas sez, "howdy".
JB, don't stay away from the Forum so much. I miss your contributions.

Michael, it's interesting that I had a similar experience a couple of years ago when he played over near the Jersey shore. I talked to him awhile at the break. He does like to talk shop with steelers. I told him I had recently had my Fessy S12U stolen, and he told me it was okay to cry when your steel gets stolen - made me feel less like a wimp. But he was almost contemptuous of unis (he is quite opinionated about everything). I wondered what changed his mind?
BTW, I also had my girlfriend along. But she was enthralled with Buddy and the band. We had some good slow dancing that night. Good memories. I figured she's a keeper. We're engaged now.  |

I'm working on that as we speak. I'm sure he has it written out, hopefully in digital form. We'll get it here for you to post.
I've been scarce because just like everyone else in the mortgage biz, life got real interesting in September when I got back from St Louis. We all got realigned though, and things are starting to clear up. Band's been real busy too, which has been great for blowing off the stress.
As for Buddy, and the NRPS, well, just goes to show, the more things change the more they stay the same. After a 25 year absence, their tour dynamics are exactly what they were-Red hot on both coasts and Canada, cool in the middle. They are playing larger and larger rooms and building a younger crowd-Don't be surprised to see a CD of new material next year. They're doing 2 weeks out, 2 weeks back and are booked pretty solid. Promoters efforts in the middle of the countrty, including here, have been abysmal, and it's keeping them from getting out here as often as they'd like.

14 strings and still no D string.
It looks a lot like the way Buddy's old D-12 was set up in that we have seen those pulls before, but never all at once on one guitar. P5 and the two LKLs on C6 are less conventional. |

I told Buddy that there was a fair amount of interest in how his setup tansferred to the Excel and this is what he said.
If you can figure it out, you'll be a step ahead of me. I just play what ever comes next in my imagination. And the peds and knees simply give me curveballs to hit. Buddy
