I haved owned only two. A ShoBud several years back and now a Fessenden. Many musicians that I know can not (nor can I) afford a collection of various models and brands. For those like me that are getting older, their pocketbook is thinning, and are hoping to buy one as a keeper, this may be a good source of info. If you ask about one particular brand, you get so many cans and can'ts that it makes it hard to focus on the overall likes or dislikes of each model. Here's hoping that just a simple radio-button poll will show a bigger picture without all the confusing minor details of a particular guitar.
If the poll does not get a large response, we will know that there is a another brand not getting the respect it's due. I am sure a few will think that is the case no matter the outcome. |

Um...yeah, I'm thinking this poll might not be answering your question as clearly as it could. There are some major brands that are left out, and some of them (Williams, Fulawka, Anapeg) are considered Rolls Royce brands that some would put at the top of their wish list, even though it is presently impractical for them to own one.
But the biggest flaw to me seems to be parsing out D10s and lumping S10s and S12s and leaving out SD10s or SD12s. This is mixing up two different questions: 1) what would be your preferred brand, and 2) what would be your preferred configuration. For most brands, the various configurations use the same materials, mechanics, finish, etc., so the particular configuration preferred is a personal preference of the player and has nothing to do with the brand. I suppose we could mentally lump together the poll results for different configuration to get the results for each brand regardless of configuration. But why not just put configuration in a separate poll - it's an entirely different, unrelated question.
Much more important than configuration is the particular model, especially for brands with long histories that have had several radically different models (Sho-Bud, Emmons, MSA, etc.). For example, someone who sees a lot of votes for Sho-Bud and goes out and gets a crossover or vinyl covered Maverick is in for a big dissappointment. |

Do you think that the majority of players would choose to own a (Williams, Fulawka, Anapeg, or Franklin) but they don't simply because they can't afford one? If so, I may have missed the boat.
As for lumping the 10s and 12s together, I could not figure out how to ask it. My thoughts were more in line with a preference for a single vs. a double neck. Some have made the comment that the possibilities of the C6 sounds on the E9th neck lessens the necessity of the weight of the double neck. Is not this the major/similar advantage of a S12?

Maybe, b0b's right. If I don't like the way the question is asked, I should move on and maybe set up my own poll. But since Savell asked, yes, I think some players might go for one of the less common brands if price and availability were no object.
As for including the configuration, it's a legitimate question, just a different one from brand preference. Suppose most of the players of brand X are pros who play D10s, so lots of people check that. You want a 12 string. In addition to those who check brand X S10 or S12, you would probably need to add in all those brand X D10s to get the true desirability of that brand. Then there's the question of S10, SD10, S12 ext. E9, SD12 ext. E9, S12U, SD12U. Seems like too much to cover in one poll. I'd rather see a poll with all the brands, including some breakdown for the main different models or eras where that matters. I figure any one brand has about the same quality in a D10, S10, S12, etc. So I'm just interested in the brand and model for that poll.
There could be another poll on the different configurations (I think there have been such polls in the past). But for me, that poll has everything to do with players' personal preferences, and nothing to do with brands. That poll would have little interest to me, because I've experimented with configurations and found what I want for right now, and what other people want is irrelevant for me. But what brand and model people would want if they could have anything, but have only one for the rest of their life - that is an interesting question to me, and probably also a lot of other people who don't care what configuration other people prefer. |
