I thought I would check in with you all. It has been a few months since I decided to explore the trumpet and give up steel guitar. I finally sold my last lap steel and while I still have my dobros, they are gathering dust (I'd give someone a good deal to take at least one of them off my hands). I've stopped going to gigs where I used to play the Dobro.

The fact is, after denying it for so long, the trumpet really took over. Yesterday I bought a flugelhorn and spent hours playing it. I come home excited to practice and recently have made some huge strides in endurance, range, and tone. I'm playing jazz, my first love, on a brass instrument instead of my trying to retrofit jazz playing on a steel instrument which I couldn't ever really get to work.

I would say for all you comeback players like me, it is never too late to go with your original passion. I made lots of friends here and in the community through my steel playing. But playing jazz on a brass instrument is like coming home after a long prison sentence. Everything about it is wonderful and I love practicing every second I can.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the update.

I glad you found your "Love".
As in human relationships, there really is a chemistry involved. When you find the right match, you are blessed.

If/when you have some recordings, please post them in the MUSIC section.

Best regards,
Joey

I'm glad to hear you're playing music in the way that speaks to you, Bill. I've tried playing a lot of different instruments, from clarinet to ukulele, but have always come back to lap steel. It just seems to fit what I want out of music.
