HI, I am making my maverick into a lap steel. I have taken out the changer fingers and am having the strings go over the bar that runs thru the changer mechanism. I have built up the changer to where this bar is the right height. The strings are going over the bar without any string notches filed in. Will this effect the tone? I ask this because I get an ever so sleight sitar buzzing from the higher C string with the C6 tuning. Do I need the grooves? Thanks

Yes, IMO. Otherwise the string is 'skating' at will on the rod. That's why you're sounding like a sitar. A 90-degree groove at least .012" to .015" deep should make a world of difference.
