"Sacred Steel," the 55-minute documentary video about the vibrant House of God steel guitar musical tradition is now available.

The professionally produced video traces the tradition from the Hawaiian music fad of the 1910s up to through the present. Included are archival and contemporary still photos, lots of live footage from church services, concert and other performance footage, interview, and rare amateur archival footage of Henry Nelson. Among the musicians are Willie Eason, Henry Nelson, Aubrey Ghent, Calvin Cooke, Ted Beard, Glenn Lee, Robert Randolph and, of course, the Campbell Brothers and Katie Jackson. The video is dedicated to Glenn Lee, who died in October, 2000 at age 32.

"Sacred Steel was the most exciting roots music to emerge at the end of the 20th century, and this video is the next best thing to actually being in church with the musicians." --Geoffrey Himes, music journalist for the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, etc.

The video will go on sale later this month at normal Arhoolie CD sources for $25 suggested retail. I am offering them at a pre-release price of $22 postpaid (US). Foreign orders please inquire by Email.

Act now! Avoid Delay! Accept no substitutes! Fantastic savings!

This is such a great video. It is so transparent it is like walking right in, sitting down, and being there. The pace is great, letting the excitement of the music, the musicians, and the spirit unfold easily. It is in retrospect that I realized that there is an enormous amount of information here, and rare archival footage that insures the importance of this documentary in history. Just seeing how the kids are welcome to come up and be near the musicians as they work was a great inspiration. I don't know if the decision to start playing outside of the church was an easy one to make for the elders, but I am grateful to them for it. I appreciate further still the opportunity to "visit" their church and homes by way of this video until I'm able to do so in person. Thanks, Bob, this is really well done and I invite other folks here to keep bumping this post up with your comments.

This is simply one of the finest performance videos I've ever seen, and certainly the best steel guitar video of any sort. I posted an appreciation on Bar Chatter yesterday. I can't imagine any regular follower of this site not being overwhelmed by the skill and enormous depth of feeling all these players display. A truly inspiring video, which no steel guitar enthusiast should be without.
Thanks, Bob!

This video is a must-have for anyone who loves the steel guitar. Bob has done a superb job of editing and the lighting & camera work are of professional quality.

The real reason to buy this tape, as Ian has said so eloquently, is the fascinating story and fire and beauty of the music. This is simply one of the finest documentaries on roots musicians you'll ever see.

Thanks Ian and Andy. Your comments mean a lot to me.

I just spoke with Chuck Campbell, who is one of those who reads the Forum but never posts. He asked me to pass along his gratitude for all the nice things people are saying about the Campbell brothers and the rest.

By the way, If you haven't seen it already "O Brother Where Art Thou?," the Coen brothers' latest, is a gas. And full of great old-time music--even a little acoustic blues too. Very highly recommended.

Thanks again,

Bob

Great video Bob! Both my wife and I really enjoyed it for all the reasons listed above.

Now, how do we get this in the running for an Academy Award for best documentary?

Thanks Bill.

By the way, I'll be out of town through Saturday, so anyone who has ordered a video recently may experience a delay of a couple of days or so.

Thanks again. I couldn't be more pleased.

Bob: What a fantastic video. All of us at Carter Steel Guitars enjoyed watching it very much.

We strongly recommend this video to anyone interested in discovering "new" avenues of expression using the steel guitar.

Truly a wonderful documentary.
