Bear Family has just released the six CD "Hag" box set, which picks up where their "Untamed Hawk" left off; it collects all of his studio recordings on Capitol from 1969 through 1976 when he left the label (though it leaves off the Bob Wills tribute). Since this is my favorite "Hag" era (which means some of my favorite country music ever) I'll probably splurge and buy it even though I have a lot of it on CD and almost all the original lps. There do seem to be a fair number of unreleased cuts.
But... from somewhere I'd gotten the idea they were going to incorporate all the (mostly) instrumental "Strangers" albums in this set (they way they have all the "Texas Troubadour" albums in their Ernest Tubb sets) and none of that stuff is here. Maybe there are plans for a separate set of that? As short as those lps tended to be I'll bet they'd all fit on 2 CDs. Or maybe Sundazed will compile something along the lines of their two excellent Buckaroo sets.
I noticed Jason Odd listed in the liner notes, perhaps he (or Norm Hamlet) can shed some light on eventual release of the Strangers material on CD? |

I was talking to my pal Winston May (the soundman at the Lexington show). Not much in music these days matters to Winston and me besides Hag and Gene Watson.  One of our favorites that was not a single is called Shelly's Winter Love. I hope they had the good sense to include that one -- it's from the album titled simply "Hag", which was around 1970.

I think I heard Merle say that was his favorite album he ever did. I would love to hear some more outtakes ( i think there were a couple on the 'Down Every Road' box)...
how many Strangers albums were there anyway? I've got 3 of them on LP. When I was a kid (like 10 years old) me and my friend started a band called The Strangers. I'd never even heard of Merle Haggard... now they're probably my favorite band of all-time.
I was listening to the Merle Haggard 'Vintage Collections' CD on Capitol today, which features some great previously unreleased tunes like "Worried, Unhappy, Lonesome, and Sorry", a very Marty Robbins-esque "Streets of Berlin", and some great live tracks. Are these tunes available anywhere else?

That would be a long complicated answer; a lot of tracks, a lot of albums!

You can click on the name of any album and a track listing and photo of the cover comes up. I believe the first full album covered in this set is "Hag" (number 18 on the list) and the last would be "A Working Man Can't Get Nowhere Today" (number 34 on the list). A few of the earliest tracks show up on "Portrait of Merle Haggard".
It seems pretty clear that Haggard didn't often go in to record a particular "album" per se; more like he recorded often and they always had a lot of tracks whenever they needed to pull an album together. There's exceptions of course with the tribute albums and "concept" albums but it's amazing to me how many of the albums were pulled together from tracks cut at many different sessions sometimes over a span of years.

yep, that was me, unofficial title: Strangers - timeline consultant.. I just made that up then.
Much earlier on there was talk of a Strangers set, or this being fully inclusive, but they stuck to what Merle actually appreared on.. hence very little from the Strangers' albums.
Deke Dickerson's notes are a truly fine read, kills me that he writes well and plays killer guitar..
I'm not in the loop as to why certain material was left out.. I'm guessing BF plan to do some sort of
deluxe re-ish of the Wills tribute LP, not unlike what they did with the Jimmie Rodgers album.
On a happy note, the 1971 Texas Playboys reunion session at Merle's ranch studio actually appear on the last Bob Wills box set.. and there's a Bonnie Owens companion box set as well. |

Yeah, it's quite a list of albums that originally contained those and a few are probably new releases on this set. Merle put one out called "My 30th Album". As I recall, that was in 1974 or 1975, and there've been a bunch since then.
I love the Bob Wills tribute. I happened to pick up a Bob Wills CD in the library one day and took it home. I think it was called "The Last Sessions" or something similar. I was listening along and in comes this unmistakable vocalist-- Merle Haggard. I grabbed the liner notes and learned that Merle had been somewhere on tour up in New England when he learned of these sessions. He just had to be there and sort of invited himself as any Bob Wills fan in his circumstance would do. I believe by this time Bob Wills was physically unable to perform. I don't know if this was the time Wills gave Merle a fiddle or not.
Anyway, I wanted to point out how authentic Merle and The Boys recreated that music. Other than the more modern sound of Norm Hamlets pedals, I'd say it was very much the Bob Wills sound. Should have been a double album though.

Well, I just got my copy of the box set, and the book answers several questions...
It turns out there's already a 3rd 6 CD box set put together that will come out in early 2008, called "Hag: Concepts, Live and the Strangers". It will have both the Jimmie Rodgers and the Bob Wills tributes (with a few outtakes), the 3 "live" albums, the "Land of Many Churches" album AND all the material from the 5 "Strangers" albums (with some previously unreleased Strangers tracks).
Meanwhile I'm happily knee-deep in classic Merle (and Roy Nichols and Norm Hamlet). |

I picked a live album (yes, I said album) by Hag called "Amber Waves Of Grain" quite a few years ago. I can't find it anywhere on CD. Anyone familiar with it?

haminahaminahamina....now THAT is something! I've got most of the albums on this current set, but man oh man I don't have ANY of the Strangers stuff. I'm lookin' forward to that next set for sure!

By “the 3 live albums”, I presume you mean Okie, Fightin’ Side, and I Love Dixie Blues. These are the live albums on Capitol. There are actually several later live albums including Rainbow Stew, and two Live at Billy Bob’s Texas (Motorcycle Cowboy, Old Country Singer). My personal favorite is Live at Billy Bob's TX - Motorcycle Cowboy.
I used to have the Jimmy Rogers tribute but traded that to my brother for a Ray Price Greatest Hits double album.
