Ebb - I always thought "That's The Way Love Goes" was one of his more trite songs. Throwing horeshoes over your left shoulder? That's something the Three Stooges used to do! 
My favorite Merle piece, lyrically, always was "I Forget You Every Day". Masterful rhyme and soulful thoughts (along with a rather non-country chord progression) make that one my fave.

You're correct. According to Lefty Frizzell's bio, Whitey and Lefty co-wrote both "That's The Way Love Goes" and "I Never Go Around Mirrors" on the same day. A pretty good days work I'd say. |

Merle suggested that Lefty record that one himself--said it could be Lefty's "Faded Love", meaning a big hit after his prime. Lefty replied, "Naw, why don't you record it and make me some real money".
I think it's still Merle's only Grammy, and for a song he didn't pen.

Hmm...Grammys? Strange awards. A little checking reveals...
Merle has won 3
Alabama has won 2
Brooks and Dunn have won 2
The Beatles have won 5
and...
Asleep At The Wheel has won 9
Top winners so far are U2 (with 22) and Stevie Wonder (with 19).
Guess I'm just out of touch with reality. |

Lefty did record it, a year or so before his death in 1975. Merle didn't release his version until 1983.
I prefer Lefty's version. When he says, "I love you too..." with that little chuckle, it gets me every time.

Scott, I haven't heard Lefty do that one, but I bet Merle has. I noticed he give a slight chuckle there now in his live performance.
Was That's The Way Love Goes his first Grammy? I remember Merle mentioning it and remarking that it was for one he didn't write. Or maybe it was just another Grammy among the 3.

| Here"s two of Merle's greatest songs I love singing and playing anywhere, everybody love's them. " Goodbyes come hard for me " & " Shelly's Winter Love ". I remember being in hag studio with him & the band as they were running over these songs before recording them.Thanks Merle,Norm,Biff,Roy,Dennis,Bobby,Bonnie,Fuzzy & Mr.Talley for these memories.
