Does anyone have an opinion of these fretboards from Bobbe Seymour's site? I'm debating getting these or John Coop's white Sho-Bud replicas. What does Bobbe mean, "direct from original manufacturer" in describing these fretboards?

I put a pair on my Super Pro from Bobbe and found the intonation to be right on. They are good fredboards. Can't speak for the ones John has.

I've had them both and found the intonation on both good. I chose Bobby's as his are made of metal and John's are made from cardstock. I dont know if thats a bad thing or not, I just liked the metal one better. Last I checked, Bobby's are more money, but he shipped the fretboard between styrofoam and plywood, so it got here in excellent condition.

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards the Coops for the two extra frets but now I am reconsidering.

Does any one have a nice overhead view closeup of their guitar with the white coop fingerboards they could upload?

Coops are on metal now and have been for some time.
They are exact.
Here's two brand new ones I just put on.

They are exact spacing from the 3D shobud plastic fretboard; including 26 frets and was the most precise shobud fretboard ever made.

John Coop has always offered the choice of black or white. I think Tom Bradshaw also offers both colors, too, as Bobbe does.

Alan, I was like you, liking the black fretboards. Ricky talked me into trying the white ones, and after playing a few gigs in subdued light, I TOTALLY love the white ones now. I wouldn't go back now. YMMV

Are the orignal fret boards on, The Professional, that far off as far as intonation goes? Mine are in good shape but I feel like I'm having an intonation problem with mine and I'd like to blame at least 10% on my fret boards. Wink

Is it worth it to replace just for a possible intonation problem?

I like this thread because people are starting to post pics of their purty guitars.
Steve,
My original Sho-Bud board on my C6 neck is warped. I think something was bent when they painted the white fret lines because the lines are curved- you can see it pretty clearly with the naked eye.
And it looks like it was layed down funny on the guitar.

Joel, I meant to ask if, in general, the fret boards on Professionals tended to be slightly out in regards to intonation. I thought that I had heard that before.

Yeah, Steve- I'm not sure. I do think quality control at Sho-Bud was a little suspect at times.
I know the fretboard isn't the only factor in good intonation- but it sure makes you nuts if it seems a little off.

Well to check a fretboard that is on a 24" scale Steel....Measure from the center/top of the roller up the fretboard. The 7th fret should be center to 8" Mark; and of course the 12th fret should center the 12" Mark and 19th fret should center the 16" mark.
If it does not; than the fretboard markings are off. The only Shobud fretboard ever to measure out exact is the 3D shobud "Dust Catcher" plastic fretboard; which is what John Coop got his exact dimensions from for the screeners. Tom Bradshaw also now offers this exact marking from the "dust catcher" in High Definition. Yes I've had many original shobuds; with their original fretboards over here.....and most are correct; but yes the screener must of been on something at some of the times...cause I've certainly seen some a little off; but not many. But I have NEVER seen a "Dust Catcher" with wrong fret markings/spacing.....and that's how Coop's are made and that's how Tom Bradshaw's are made. Coop's are on metal and Tom's are on Vinal.
I haven't had a fretboard from Bobbe Seymour over here in a while; so I can't speak on that.

Ricky,
I checked on my homebuilt. Lo and behold..I had done a good job painting the fret lines on the neck by lining up to an old black Sho-Bud fret board. Except for the 19th fret..it was off by almost 1/16 of an inch.

As for making new fret lines, can this method be used?:
Using a tuner and a knife edge. This lines up the exact spot for the fret...

Ricky, you wanna talk intonation problems? How about those Permanents that had the slotted pillow blocks where you could move the blocks/axle/fingers back and forth about 3/8 of an inch. If you moved your changer back for the longer scale, the fingerboard would really be off!

Bent; I really don't know how that would work out, seems doable, but never done it.
John; I know man...that is freakish about the adjustable finger/bridge...
When Kevin Owens had Jimmy Day's original Blue Darlin Perm. over; I measured it and it was of course OFF...ha....so I fixed his scale to the scale of the fretboard...which was a 24 1/2" scale Perm...
Here's one for ya. I just got a first year LDG in; to work on....I took it out of the case...and chimed it and it didn't chime...then found where it chimed.....between the 11th and 12th fret....and freaked me out. So went to measuring on the fretboard and it is actually a fretboard made for a 25" scale steel. It was a flat fretboard on tin; and black with white lines and shobud card suits and everything original looking; but NOT for any shobud I've seen made. It also had 26 frets. It had to of been on there since mid 70's; as when I pulled it off of course there's the non-faded green area...
I don't know how anybody played this steel in tune; it was the most wrong fretboard I've ever seen.
Here's a pic of it; with the right fretboard on it...but look how much longer that 26 fret line was; compared to the RIGHT 26 fret line board that's on it now.....geeeeeeeeeeeze go figure that one out..ha.

Ricky, that's very strange, but it doesn't surprise me. The guitar I'm workin' on now, had all the baskets backwards. Someone messed up one basket so that you couldn't turn it around to the correct position. So they just reversed all the baskets so it wouldn't look like a mistake! It also had a meteorite embedded into the topside of the pedal rack bar. Looked awful! But,,,,they sold it anyway!

It's not my idea but rather a suggestion from Eddie Fulawka. And we all know what a builder/innovator HE is Smile

So if there ever is a next building project for me, I might as well attempt it.

Ricky, go ahead and "free-hand" two more frets on that guitar, and make it a 28 fret'r!! At least you'll compensate for the fade out!! Laughing Laughing
