Numbers for pedal rods.....

Post by Mike Kowalik »

Sometime back there was a thread about where to get the little plastic numbers to put on your pedal rods and someone replied that they were actually markers for electrical wiring....there was also a link posted as to where to find these.

I've gone back thru previous posts trying to locate it but can't.

Can someone help me?
Am I even looking in the right section?

Not sure what was posted. Electrical numbers can be pick up at any electrical supply house or you can order from www.grainger.com this is industrial warehouse. Bradley is a well known brand. I have used staggered black tape or use the printer and cut out the numbers or letters placew on with scott tape.

Those little numbers are hard to see, and impossible in the dark. What a lot of us do is take tape (I use 1" gaff, black) and while the guitar is assembled, we take short pieces of it and wrap them around the pedal rods in a descending diagonal line, left to right. Makes it easy to put it together in darkness, too.

I had no luck with anything staying usable and not getting sticky from the tape until I took white heat shrink tubing and cut it into 1/8 " sections, slipped the correct number on the rod and shrunk them with a heat gun.

I file small little grooves across the rod as close to the "hook" end as possible,,,one for 1st pedal,,,2 for 2nd pedal,,etc. Very easy to "read" with a thumbnail in the dark,,,,

I use a Brother P Touch labeler with white tape and black numbers and wrap them around the "head" (sliding part) of the couplers. They can be seen in fairly low light.

Several months ago I asked Tom Palmer of D2F covers to make me a separate pouch for pedal rods. Just remove them from the guitar and reinstall them in the same order left to right or right to left each time and you cuold do it in the dark.

I posted the topic in 'Wanted to Buy'. I couldn't find the electrical rings in single quantities. I ended up buying a set from Bill Rudolph at Williams Guitars. Just put them on last night. Perfect!

I never thought of that one. That's brilliant. Beats my masking tape and magic marker hands down.

With the MSA, one pedal rod fits all.
Great for darkened venues.

I've only got 4 pedals so it's not much of a deal.

One pc. of white tape around #1 at the hook end, 2pcs. around #2, 3 pcs. around #3, nothing on #4, any dummy can find where that one goes, even in the dark!

I file small notches in mine 1 thru eight. On a dark stage, you can run your thumbnail down 'em and
count. Works for me.

Yes, but it's not just one fitting all, the main thing for me is that each rod has been adjusted for height, and if I put them on the wrong way round I've lost all those hours of getting the settings the way I like them.

I bought and sold a D-10 Dekley that had once belonged to a blind steeler. It had beads spot-welded onto it, one bead for pedal one, two for #2, etc.

I make my rods all exactly the same length so it doesn't matter what goes where.

Just kidding!

If it gets too dark to see the numbers in the dark get one of those flash lights with the wind up crank. Never a dead battery.

Alan, That's the good point about the modern MSA.
All the pedal rods are of equal length and the height adjustment is done where the pedal rod joins the cross-rod, as can be seen in the illustration.

My Mullen has the numbers stamped into the sliding part on the rods. I rubbed black paint into them, makes it much easier to see, but now I think I'll replace the black with white, it should work even better. Just rub a small amount on, then wipe it off before it dries, it leaves the numbers filled.

It's a shame all pedal steels are not built that way.
