| I have already tried changing the settings on the X controls. What level should my security be,The default is Medium-high and that's what I have but should it just be medium when I download the program. I accidentally deleted it from my computer and am making no progress downloading it from Adobe. So Should I close my Spysweeper too...I'll be honest here; I am just flailing around and am thoroughly frustated. If anyone has the solution assume that I know nothing maybe that would be better. I've run into trouble trying to download Adobe Flash Player also. I gave up a while ago, and now I can't seem to play videos I've downloaded from You Tube. I used to be able to, but now they show as files, but I get a message saying a "plug-in is missing".
I have gotten tangled up a couple of times in trying to install QuickTime Alternative and Uninstall QuickTime itself, download "Codec packs", etc.
What are "the X controls"??? 
Does anyone know of a book, website, etc. that actually might clearly explain how this stuff works to a complete ignoramus?
As ignorant as I am about this infernal machine, it's a miracle I haven't blown it up! |

As far as I can determine Active X controls are actually a set of rules to help programs interface with each other. Unfortunately they can sometimes be harmful to your computer platform so when you set up your security levels it will say things like enable X controls or not enable.... Thats about all I know.
And that isn't much. |

Hi Peter-
Is the username you log in as an administrator?
If you're downloading from the Adobe site,
warning popups should give you the option to download,
then there should be an option in the next dialogue box to always trust Adobe if you want to do that.
Then the download page will reload and you select download again and it should begin.
There was a flakey flash security update from microsoft a while back that might or might not install, but if you install the most current version of flash you won't be bothered with th ms update.
But you should have admin privileges to install.

| Along with the excellent advice from Joe, you may want to uninstall any old version Of the Macromedia (now Adobe) Flash before you download the latest version. |

CNET's Glossary defines ActiveX controls as:
"software components typically used to enrich Web pages by calling on the functionality of locally installed Microsoft applications."
Just do a simple web search on activex or activex controls or x controls. That should satisfy you.
In Internet Explorer 7, under Tools>Options> within there somewhere, will show you what ActiveX components have been downloaded, still resident, etc.
Options to delete there, also.
Funny thing is that the networking/computing world was built on the assumption that people wanted to help each other and not hurt each other. Freely sharing knowledge and resources.
Much like here at the SGF.
All the patches, security issues, etc. show otherwise. All the complexities we must endure has raised the bar of technical expertise to a high level just to do the most simple tasks.

Hello Mr. Jack.
I consider that quite a compliment coming from ol' seasoned "hacker" like yourself.
From other posts I learned that you had to fight a few physical battles awhile back.
My thoughts and prayers out to you to continue on the path of healing and help us out here.
Many times it's about like trying to explain, "How'd Emmons do that!?!"
