Can someone shed some light on what may be causing this glitch:
We've just discovered that none of the GaSGA members with yahoo email addresses are receiving emails from our Vice President, Bill Cunningham, whose email address is with Bellsouth.net.
We don't know if it's on Bill's/bellsouth end, or if it's on yahoo's end.
(With Bill on the phone with me, we even tried it with me sending him an email -which he did get- and then Bill "replying" directly to me. It still didn't go through.) _________________ Donna Dodd

DD,
I've had this happen, and it was because the sender's email address, or IP address, got on Yahoo's spam list, usually because some spammer had used it for nefarious purposes. The solution was to contact Yahoo and get them to fix it. Good luck. _________________ C#

If Yahoo! email customers are able to send to bellsouth.net, but not receive from it, the problem lies with one or the other system. Outgoing mail servers will send to anybody, unless configured with a restricted list of recipients (unlikely). On the other hand, incoming mail is usually compared to various blocklists to either flag, or delete messages coming from known sources of spam. Yahoo! usually delivers suspected spam to your bulk mail box, in case it is not spam. If this was a spam trap issue you should have seen Bill's reply in your bulk folder. Since it never arrived at all the problem is either with a misconfigured mail server at BellSouth, or Yahoo.
I would have Bill send messages to these members at their ISP's assigned email addresses, rather than Yahoo accounts. If those messages get delivered you will at least have a method of communication, while the Yahoo mail problems get sorted out.
I do know that Yahoo is dinking around with their email system and interface and this may be causing the mail delivery holdups. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I've had problems several times sending our club e-mail to some members. One problem was that my ISP, RoadRunner, was being blocked by one ISP. I've had problems with others because they or their ISP had SPAM filters and the club e-mail was being detected as SPAM and the individuals had to manually set their SPAM to allow the club e-mails.
(Another problem I have is club members will change e-mail address/ISP and not notify me and those messages get "bounced" back as undeliverable) |

For members who are not aware of the terms we are using, blocklists and blacklists are lists of what are known as IP addresses, which are located within ranges of addresses assigned to various Internet Service Providers (ISPs). When spam email is reported to companies that track spam sources they trace the ISP from which the spam was sent and send a report to the appropriate abuse department. If that report is acted upon, and acknowledged, and the problem service is closed, then nothing more is done. However, if the ISP ignores the report, or does nothing to stem the spam, then that ISP's entire range of assigned IP addresses is added to the blocklist supplied by the reporting agency. Other ISPs subscribe to various blocklists, and if they are using one that blocks your ISP, your email will not be delivered. If they choose to send this email to "dev/null" you will not even be notified that is was sent to their blackhole account. Such email is lost forever.
The spam problem today is worse than it has ever been in my memory. All of it is now sent by compromised zombie computers that are members of spam botnets. All of these computers belong to either home or business customers. Most of the service providers are not equipped to do much about stopping these computers from sending email, short of terminating accounts, which they usually don't want to do, for financial reasons. In the end, every ISP will end up on a blocklist and nobody will be able to send email anymore. This day is fast approaching. Many companies are switching their email systems to filtering systems that only allow email from senders on a "whitelist." These systems are also available to individual customers, for a fee. I call this the "closed mote system." There are also a few systems that use challenge and response to differentiate robot email from human email. Only humans can respond to the challenge sent from the system. These senders are then placed on whitelists of acceptable senders, unless the recipient reports their messages as spam. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I really appreciate everyone's input. It's very helpful to have things explained!
I will call Yahoo tomorrow.

There are daily e mails between me and my sister
with no problems.
She is in Covington Georgia and has Bell South.
I am in Tampa, Florida and use Yahoo.
A couple of years ago we were using AT&T and Verizon
with many problems. Sometimes the mail would get lost and sometimes there would be a 3 day delay.
The Verizon people told me it was an incompatibility
between the two systems. They were "working" on it. |
