This will be the last one I "show off" ... I promise ... but it's kinda special ... cause:

1) It's a tiny little thing ... only 1 3/16" wide ... cause the builder is using his "changer" on an 8 stringer ... and needed as much room as possible ...

2) It's the first one I sanded, buffed and polished the steel shell to a mirror shine (like I usta do when I was nickel plating) ... then shot with Hi Gloss Clear Powder (powder coat) ... it came out very well ... Mr. Green

3) It's for a special person ... one of my favorite players ...

Phil Bender ...

Yep, that's the clear blue sky ... being reflected Laughing Laughing Laughing

Why? It's not like we are all so busy reading hundreds of threads. It's good to learn about new ideas and products. Keep them coming.

In the whole world of non pedal steel guitars, this forum is the cutting edge. It's history in the making.

That is a beautiful pickup. It will sound great in Phil's guitar, no doubt about that. What does the powder coating process envolve? By all means keep posting photos of your new creations. They are very "edgeabakashunal".

Thanks for all the kind words, y'all ... Mr. Green

I do enjoy posting photos ... especially new stuff ... or something with an unusual "twist" ... like this unit.

Packing that much power into such a small package ... to give Phil a unit ... like the ones he heard/played when he was here ... was a fun "project".

Speaking of "show off" photos ... wait till you see what I'm gonna post next weekend ...

Or better yet ... come to Joliet ... and see/hear/play them for yourself ... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Ron ...

Powder coating is essentially 'spraying' a grounded piece of metal with electrostatically charged plastic powder (polyester, polyurethane, etc ... depending on the powder) via a compressed-air powered "gun".

Then the piece is baked ... usually for 20 minutes at 400 F (depending again on the powder) after the powder first starts to melt ...

The melting forms a uniform layer which then hardens.

It's ready to go once it cools ... no prolonged curing times.

It's really cool stuff ... but it took me awhile to get decent at it ... like anything, I guess.

Hello again,
I just received my new pick up from Rick Aiello, amd is it a beauty. Now to see how good it sounds. Here is what it is going on, body out of tiger striped walnut, laminated hard maple neck, Rick's PU, and a 4 tuning changer of my design derived from Don Sweatman's design. It hasn't been proved out for longivity, but according to Danny James, it should be OK.Here are some pics, hope they come through.

oops, somebody tell how to do pics again please Sad

Is this the one ...

If not ...

To use the SGF's new picture hosting ... click on "upload picture" button (above Close Tags - upper right corner ... below Img and URL buttons) ...

Use "browse" to locate the photo on your computer ... follow the instructions ... then hit the "Insert picture" button ...

Yes, from what I've seen, I do believe Phil has a good workable design on his changer too. Cool

Although the one I made is quite different from my friend Phil's first one, it was seeing his tuning changer that inspired me to try my luck at building one. Idea

Now here he goes again with yet another unique design for a tuning changer that is looking good. Very Happy Very Happy

I have another one started too, that will be just slightly different than my first one.

It seems there is just no end to this---- Smile
