That's Jimmy Grabowske and he is indeed a terrific player and a wonderful person. I got to play a gig with him in August when he filled in for Bert Rivera.

Though the article mentioned that Doug Sahm took lessons from Jimmy way back when, Bert was also a student and admirer of Jimmy's. As you probably know, Bert is starting to get the hang of that steel guitar too.

Jimmy has lots of interesting stories. He visited Harry Choates in jail the day before he died and said he was in sad shape wiht the DTs but not close to death.

Anyways, it's great to see the Austin Chronicle give some attention to Jimmy. He swings like mad and can play incredible chords and squeeze 'em so they sound like the whole Basie brass and reed section. A real joy to hear.

Some of his playing from the 50's is out on CD on those Krazy Kat compilations. Look for Delores and the Bluebonnet Boys or Jesse James and All The Boys to hear what he was up to.

Howard:

Do you happen to know if Jimmy plays on Doug and the Swing Boys recording of "Swingin' with Doug"???

That article mentions that he played with that band. I have heard quite a bit of recorded Grabowske, but I can't ID his style well enough to tell.

Hi Mitch - Sorry, I don't know if that's Jimmy on the Doug and the Swing Boys tune, but I'll ask him when I see him next.

One interesting thing about Jim, is that he played with Hank williams on his last performance. ( Hank's last that is) This was at the Skyline Club in Austin and after that Hank would not make it to his next shows in West Virginia and Canton, Ohio. I have not heard him play, but everyone around Austin that has, say great things about his playing.

Jimmy's my friend, and I love his playing and him too! He is a great guy, and I believe they put him in the Texas Hall of Fame in 2005, if I'm not mistaken.
