If you are over the age of 65 I'm sure you remember Kay Kaiser and his "Kollege Of Musical Knowledge"
Well, this year at HSGA Joliet 2007 we present the world premier of -
Kay Das and his Kollege of Steel Guitar Knowledge.
On Saturday Oct 13th sometime between 3 PM and 5 PM (while the main convention room transforms into a luau paradise), our very own Kay Das will host a "quiz" to see how well you really know your steel guitar recordings and musicians.
This fun "quiz" will be held in one of the meeting rooms of the Holiday Inn.
Kay has accumulated ten classic and obscure steel recordings of the past. He will play snippets of each song - your task is to identify the steel guitar artist. The person who correctly identifies the most - wins. Prizes to be determined.
I'm sure Kay would like to elaborate - Kay? _________________ Gerald Ross

This fun competition is open to youths of all ages including those sixty-five and over. If you do wish to test your steel guitarist knowledge, do attend, it will be fun....the quiz will hopefully be not too hard. Most of my obscure steel guitar recordings on LPs are still unpacked, awaiting the day I will get a turntable as a Christmas present ( hint hint to my better half....)
The Kay Das Kollege will hopefully not tax your grey cells too much, and neither your ears, but might tug a few heartstrings...it was great listening to the clips one after another myself and some of them are really poignant to listen to....all the recordings are from well-known artistes, some of whom may be sitting next to you....and hopefully will not let on...
Prizes for the winning youths. |

Should be a fun contest ! Hey, you mentioned KAY KAISER...Another old band of that bygone era was that of SAMMY KAYE. He used a steel guitarist on the opening of most of his recordings. I wonder if anyone knows who the steel guitarist was in his orchestra? I have absolutely no idea who he was. Probably many of you young'un's have no idea who KAY KAISER or SAMMY KAYE were ???? |

Keoki...a good friend of mine, Johnny Monoco played steel with Kaye's orchestra and then a man playing a Gibson double neck took over the chair until Johnny returned a year later. I guess the gent with the double neck didnt dig the sound. So Johnny came home to do Harbor Lights. Can't recall that name off hand .Wished I could be of more help....Nope wasn't me and he has since passed on. It was my teacher, the GREAT Joe Monte!!!!!

As I may have a bit more "floor time" on Saturday than originally thought , I have increased the number of tracks from 10 to 15, if there is to be enough time. We will decide on the day. Its going to be great fun!
Sharpen your ears... and your pencils! |
