In the early 1970s I bought a Bob Wills album, that was recorded in Nashville. The picture on the front of the album showed Bob's band in the recording studio. The steel player had a crewcut or flat top hair style and was playing a Fender 1000 psg. On some of the songs the steel player played the instrumental parts "Chalker Style". Bob referred to the steel player as "Brother Phil." Some years later I mentioned this album to Julian Tharpe. Julian told me the guys name is Phil Sperbeck.
Does anyone have information on Phil Sperbeck?

Roger, Phil was playing with Wills in the mid '60's i think. Albert Talley would know for sure because I remember the two of them on Wills' Faded Love album i'm pretty sure. Sperbeck also played with Leon Rausch at the old County Line strip in Grand Prairie Texas the same time as I and Terry Morris (fiddle) did. Phil also played lead/rhythm guitar. I don't know his whereabouts now. I think he was older than me and I'm 74.

Roger -
I talked to Phil over the phone about a year and a half ago - he's doing well and still
playing, locally, when the opportunity arises -
He lives in Lecompte, Louisiana these days.

upright steel . . . and that guy over on electric bass . . .that's Curly Chalker!
