Well Ive been playing my new D-10 carter for about two weeks now, and I have to say this is going to be a very long love affair! This guitar sounds a lot like an Emmons PP, but with some other quality that is hard to pin down but sure is pleasing to the ear.
It also has a lot of what I would call "Timbre", which makes for fat rich chords but, punchy on the single note stuff. The action on this thing is extremely fast, so fast pickin is a lot easier than on my old guitar. It is a very light guitar but it sits nice and solid with little or no movement while playing. We all have our preferences, and there are a lot of great guitars out there, but I sure won't be looking around. This one is a keeper!!

Robert, I have a D10 Magnum and I feel the same way about it. It just plays and sounds so good and seems to fit like a glove. I really enjoy playing it. Not to say I would ever get rid of my Emmons guitars but this Magnum is one of my favorites.

Robert, congrats. I am on my 3rd Carter D10, ,9+8, I find it to be quite satisfactory for all I do and then some..and more...
I call it my "Space". Light, very reliable, very consistent, excellent action..all that...This is not to say I wouldn't have another steel, but I will never be without this one..or one just like it...
A good Emmons pal came by one of our gigs a month or so back, he sat in on my Carter. I played Tele' behind him, he looked at me half way thru the first song and said..
"I had no idea this Steel was this nice "...
then he continued to play his butt off...
there are lots of fine Steels out there for sure, and the Carters are to be included in that group.

I've owned four and I will say that they stay in tune better than any guitar I ever owned and I got many compliments from other steel players on my tone.
It's also the only guitar I ever sat down to where it just felt right without making any changes.
An Emmons player was at the club one night and asked me what year my Emmons was and when he found out it was Carter he said it sounded just like a Push Pull. |

I am on my second Carter and it is just magnificent. It is a combination of all the best of MSA and all the best of MCI. Bud Carter really has a winner here!

| Hi guys, just got my D-10 Carter delivered by the big brown truck last Thursday. This guitar is so fine I can't believe it. Plays like butter and sounds like my pp and sustains for a week. I am actually having a much easier time playing fast picking, and when the Carter people say it will improve your playing they are right. When I set it up and began tuning it I hadn't noticed,but I had my bar laying btw necks and I heard a vibration and started looking for something loose and lo and behold, my bar was vibrating like crazy from single string vibration. BCT is for real, never had this happen with any steel before! Looked at lots of guitars at ISGC and the Carter is as fine as any. A long love affair for sure! Jim |

Ulf, I have the XR-16 pickups in my Carter. I chose them because I wanted to get a fat rich tone, but with punch for the single note stuff. Al Brisco really helped me with this, and after I heard Wayne Dahl play a solo with Martina Mcbride's band on You tube it was more than enough to sell me on getting these pickups. Wayne apparently has the XR-16's in his Carter and boy does he sound great! Of course it is more than the pickups doing this, but I can tell you my Carter sounds fantastic!
On another topic, I played the Shjak ( I hope I spelled that right) festival in Norway two years ago and boy was it a blast! Unfortunatly, I did not have time to visit my Dads birthplace in Sweden. It is a small town called Heggschovik, which is in the north and very close to the border with Norway. I do hope to get back there again soon!! |

Those XR16's seems to be the thing for a Carter.
I got to try one.
If things goes well i'll be doing some gigs in Norway next summer, see you then:wink:

| My best sounding Carter was the first D-10 I got. Black mica, 8 & 5 with XR-16's. It had the XR-16's on it when I got it here which is not what I ordered on it. That was a good mistake though! |

| could someone explain to me ..once you've got a great steel, why do you buy 3 or 4 more....?? ..is everybody so rich they're just dying to spend money? i bought a zum in '82 and it still works, so that's what i play....'course i wish i were wealthy enough to buy more.... |

Well seriously i've been totally happy with my MSA Classic SS and it's nothing but a piece of fine engeneering from Bud Carter.
Then i got an offer to buy a Franklin at a very reasonable price, so i took it.
Last summer i stumbbled upon a fine Emmons SKH with "THE" tone. For once i had the cash, so i bought it.
Having three steels is a bit confusing to me though, so i've decided the MSA has to go. (i'll regret it)
And i'm curious about a Carter now...

Why more than one Instrument ?
Some people live in big houses, some have fine cars, some have hobbies which they spend the big bucks on,some play Golf twice a week, some go Fishing in there fine Fishing Boat and some are always looking for another Instrument or two...
It's not about the moment..
it's about the journey...
I don't believe it's about folks with many many dollars ,I think it's more about folks who work hard and enjoy a little bit of relief and or self satisfaction for the 40 hour week, or more...
Some folks are very frugal, they still drive there 1987 Toyota, while others drive there 1987 Toyota and have new 'Vette in the Garage !

Hehheh........Ken, my wife has "Killed" me several times over for buying instruments! However, remember the old standby's....you know.....flowers, candy, a day at the spa, or maybe a fancy new bath robe with her initials on it! These all worked for me, and I got away with just a few minor bruises!!
