I have thinking about this for awhile.I was just curious where most of you guys set you tone knobs on your amps. Now I know there are a million variables such as different rooms ,studio, which amp, which steel, which effect, etc. But I have found that every steel player has his own sound in his head that he tries to achieve.I will make this easy.
Lows 1-10
Mids 1-10
Highs 1-10
Reverb 1-10
Here are my typical settings.
Lows 9
Mids 0
Highs 7
Reverb 7

My settings on my NV1000 are usually in this area. LOW +9 , MID -6 , Shift 800hz, High +6, Presence +6, Reverb 4. Of course these settings change depending on the kind of room I am playing in and which guitar I am playing.
I found the following information on this website: http://danny.hullihen.tripod.com/id33.htm. Of course these were all these settings were for the NV1000 also. I had a lot of fun trying some of them out.
Paul Franklin - Amp #1 - Low +9, Mid -6, Shift 500Hz., High +3, Presence -3.
Amp #2 - Low +6, Mid -9, Shift 500Hz., High 0, Presence +3.
Lloyd Green - Low +6, Mid -10, Shift 600Hz., High +3, Presence +6
Johnny Cox - Low +9, Mid -10, Shift 800Hz., High +3, Presence -3
Stu Basore - Low -6, Mid -5, Shift 750Hz., High -6, Presence +3
Randy Beavers - Low +9, Mid -5, Shift 800 Hz., High +6, Presence +6
Hal Rugg - Low +6, Mid -6, Shift 700 Hz., High +2, Presence -3

John,
The shift knob on the NV1000 and other amps basically changes the frequency range of the amp. I'm sure there are others out there that can explain it a lot better than me, but just like with any electronic device, changing the frequency does have an effect on the tone.
