Self Introduction

Post by Dave Britton »

I'm new to the forum and steel guitar in general. I've always loved bluegrass music, especially the 5- string banjo. Hawaiian music, incorporating the steel guitar was my second passion, but couldn't find published lesson material or any private instruction until reecently. I also enjoy western swing and gospel.

Once I retired and found this forum, it opened my eyes to the possibility of learning the lap steel guitar. The amount of knowledge and willingness of members to share information about the steel guitar is remarkable. The HSGA forum has also been a blessing.

Learning a whole new instrument is very exciting, although I'm aware it will require 100s of hours of practice just to learn a few basics. I have a very experienced teacher now and some other resources too, including this forum.

I'm starting on a great 8-string guitar, the West Coast Steel Guitar Model WC-8H, tuned to C6. I've attached a photo for those of you not familiar with this guitar.

Welcome, Dave. I moved the picture to the bottom of your message. That's a nice little lap steel.

Actually, your picture looks better than the one on the West Coast website. I'm considering a West Coast 8 classic, myself. Welcome aboard. 8)

Welcome to the Forum, Dave.

My musical tastes run in the same vein - Hawaiian, Blue Grass, Western Swing, and Gospel, however I play only Hawaiian and Gospel steel.

You have a great adventure ahead. Keep on pickin'
and grinin'.

Aloha, :)

Bob Littleton's guitars

Post by Kay Das »

Dave,

There are some great choices out there lately in the newer lap steel guitars.

You made one great choice, if you like the modern styles. I have two of Bob Littleton's guitars and I love them for the clean tone and great sustain of the GeorgeL pickups. With that I can get a little close a 1930's tone to Eric Clapton on a mixing board. They are easy to play and the shape is aerodynamic, if that is a criterion for steel guitar (LoL)!!! You can see pics of my guitars at my website: www.homepage.mac.com/kaydas

Bob Littleton is a great guy too! He also made me a custom steel which I am very pleased with.

I do not know about requiring 100s of hours to learn, ten should be good to get a tune out of Bob's guitars, they are easy to play..

Steal the steelin'...
