Just saw one of these available close to my area a few hours away. It looks in good condition. Before I make the drive, how do these sound? I have heard New Yorkers online and those seem to sound great. Does this double-neck 8 string sound comparable to the New Yorker? And what's a reasonable price ...

Thanks for all the replies. Those Allen Melbert 8 strings are very tempting. Does anybody have any audio or video clips? Of course, I 'll keep an eye out on eBay for anything interesting popping up.

That would be ideal, but where I live (atlanta) you hardly see any in town. I'm a bit hesitant to just buy something online without seeing, touching and playing it first.

Here's a pic of the lap steel in question. It played well, and had a sweet sound. The only playing problem was that around the 15th fret and higher I wasn't getting much sustain at all on the higher strings. Is that easily fixed with a setup? Also, couldn't tell what kind of pickup was in there. Eve...

It's a guitar center so they're probably overpricing it. I'm going to go check it out and play it. If it's in good condition and plays/sounds good, I'll see if I can get the price down

Sounds great! What tuning are you using on that one? Is that an 8 or 10 string?
