Many thanks Ian! As to your question re P4 it's a mystery to me too, my only thought is that it was a legacy change that he'd not thought to change or perhaps it was ergonomically convenient for a particular phrase or lick? Honestly I haven't examined Buddy's C6 playing in great detail, the bits and...

Buddy Cage's 1970s E9 Copedent

Howdy folks, I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what changes Buddy Cage was using on his E9 neck during the '70s for all those classic NRPS records? I've done a bit of a deep dive and haven't found much aside from copedents for his later steels, I have a vague memory of it being in the Winnie ...

Howdy Christopher, great looking Grand Console you've got there! If you flip it over there should be a little steel plate with the serial number stamped on it which you can cross reference against this approximate guide; 1940 - 42 ----------- G suffix 1947 ---------------- V100 - V7500 1948 --------...

I've got an old single cone Dobro which I've strung up in B11 tuning and it sounds pretty phenomenal for the Hawaiian stuff. I've got no idea about what the early folks were playing but I'd likewise be very interested to hear if anyone did get on board the single cone train!

Cheers for the responses fellas, I really appreciate the insight. The last couple of shows I played I used the volume pedal in a very similar way to your method Tim (which was mostly to do pedal steel-type swells on the more country numbers) which was definitely in the comfort zone. Last night I pla...

Volume pedals and console steel..?

Howdy folks, lately I've been playing a lot more non-pedal (after 10 or so years of playing pedal steel almost exclusively) as more of the gigs I'm taking are western swing/early honky-tonk, and the more I dive into it the less and less I'm inclined to use a volume pedal - preferring to use my pinky...

I would strongly recommend checking out the Ernest Tubb & the Texas Troubadours album 'On Tour' for peak Buddy Charleton/Leon Rhodes action - there's a great mix of really sweet backup steel on ballads and red hot instrumentals.
