Since for most purists, having the coil rewound changed the instrument forever, (it's no longer a true Ric). I had to have mine rewound as it was unplayable. It sounds real fine to me which is the person I have to please. I think you should do whatever you want to your instrument to make it playable...

There was a complete set of panda plates w/ pots and knobs sold on ebay last week for $76.00. The seller was Frontiersupplies out of Fullerton, CA. He had other panda parts he was offering as well. You might try contacting him through ebay. Good luck!

Have you checked to make sure the knob is not spinning when you put a tight load on it? I have had that experience where the gears worked until you almost got the string up to tune. I found that the knob would slip under load. The remedy was to super glue the knob to the shaft. If the gears are mess...

My Ric B8 allows me to play everything that you can on a 6 string. It also provides two additional bass strings that gives you another octave of range. I think more is better in that case.

Welcome to the forum David! I started playing lap steel about six months ago. My back ground was in rhythm guitar and violin. I bought a Mel Bay DVD and book which helped a little. The best help by far was purchasing the Jerry Byrd instruction book with CD's. It is only available from Scotty's Music...

More String Info

J, The string diameters are #2 = .014, #3 = .017 or .018, #5 = .020 - .024, #6 = .030 -.036. I believe that bOb might supply the individual strings or knows who does. I checked at Elderly Instruments and they sell a John Pearse 8 string set that I use on my Ric B8. They are nice strings! You would h...

String Clarification

J, The clarification on the strings is: #1,2 & 3 use a #2 plain Spanish guitar string. #4 use a plain #3 Spanish guitar string. #5 & 6 use flat wound strings. That should get us pretty close.

Special Strings

J, I asked Ray about the string diameters. He referred me to the Jerry Byrd Fan Club. On the Jerry's guitar page it says to use a plain 2nd string for strings #1,#2 & #3 and a plain 3rd string for string #4. He said he got his from a Gibson dealer in San Antonio. However when I was getting a les...

Special Strings

Ray told me that he orders the strings for his Panda from bOb. He uses non wound strings so you don't get that scratching sound when barring the base strings. The bar seems to effortless glide over the strings. I can find out the diameters he uses if you would like.

Check out Ray's rendition of Liebestraum on Ray's CD page at the jerrybyrd-fanclub.com. It is a beautiful piece and his use of special strings certainly adds to the seamless sound.

Alan, thanks for the nice comments! What like of little rubber feet were you refering too? The tennis racquet case is truly a stroke of genius. There are probably 100 million at garage sales that could be had for next to nothing. Each time I buy an instrument without a case regardless of the price I...
