Right, that lowest G was called gamma which would be a G in Greek. They at this time established a first octave in capital letters and continuing with lowercase letters into the next octave up (much like today). I guess they didn't have a bigger G so a gamma seemed like a good solution. Eventually t...

Ok, my memory may be a bit fuzzy here but.... Yes the answer has to do with the church modes - Dorian, Phrygian, Lydiam, and Mixolydian known as the authentic modes as well as their counterparts the plagal modes Hypo-Dorian, Hypo-Phrygian etc. Authentic modes extended from their final note (think to...

If you want to keep it small and cheap, you might try a Laney Cub 10. It's a cool little amp with 6V6 tubes like Bob just recommended. Laney is mostly known for metal amps, but many people find these to sound a bit on the "tweedy" side. Unfortunately if you move up to the Cub 12 it's back ...

If Todd's bar isn't the right size, Jim Burden of Bullet Bars will make you a double ended bar like a Twister, and he'll let you choose the length and diameter. I've got a Twister and Burden - both great bars.

Sonic Crowd at Brooklyn Sound Room

Hey there, So I already posted a link over in "Steel Without Pedals" where I was informed that this was really the ideal place for this, so... Here's a recording/video of part of an improv session session that I took part in earlier this year with a diverse and cool group of musicians when...

Thanks guys! It was fun. We did a lot of playing/recording that night, but only the first bit had video. The Bruno Fuzz Machine came out a bit later.

Adrienne, lemme know if you thinks there's a better genre name for this stuff... ya know just in case we need to fit into a radio format.

Sonic Crowd at Brooklyn Sound Room

So I was back home in the States for a bit a few months back, and while I was in Brooklyn my friend Matt called me up and said I should come over and play in a jam session at his new studio which he calls The Brooklyn Sound Room. So I pulled a steel out of the closet at my sister's place. The string...

I used to have a red knob Dual Showman head, which I believe was a very similar amp to the Twin of that era. I never played it with a steel, but I can say that the clean headroom was pretty impressive.

I can also recommend Jim Burden's bars. When I got an 8 string steel, he made me a bar that's 3 1/4" by 13/16" with a double bullet end. It's a great bar; I love it! You can definitely play an 8 string with the normal 6 string size bar, but I think it's worth trying a larger size.

It happens to Gibson laps quite a bit too. My Ultratone was cannibalized for tuners, knobs and even the pickup magnet.
