Dave, I hear you. The equipment changeover contributes to my sucky guitar playing dilema. I can't play it as well if I'm not getting the sound I want out of the amp. That problem goes away (for me) when I use separate amps (and everything between), which I don't usually. Keeping the schlep down. My ...

another light comes on

Thanks guys. Great ideas. I don't know why it took me so long to figure out what was happening. I will be doing some exercising and stretching between steel songs. As luck would have it, the band played a single, unusually long set this past weekend. Instead of the usual lists; The band leader just ...

Thanks Mike! I'll try that. I have some good warm up exercises from classical guitar lessons long ago. Once I get set up and tuned, I'm usually trying to warm up on steel. I do know that the warm up I get from the last few songs on the first set doesn't carry me through to the end of the second set....

Left hand "tightness" after playing PSG

Most of my gig sets consist of about 50 mins of PSG playing, then finishing out with 2-3 songs on 6 string. My 6 string playing seems worse (to me) than if I had just picked up the guitar cold. This is mostly during fast soloing. Playing chord grips not so bad. I have started holding the bar a littl...

pedal battery

I have been using this battery pack for quite a while. Mostly to reduce noise but it's really convenient. Has USB out but I use the 9V barrel connectors to power both of my small pedal boards (pictured) and my Hilton VP. Usually 4 pedals on floor board. I get about 8 hours of playtime. Recharge time...

How do you tell? Do tell....

Lots of opinions on the merits and tone (or not) of BCT but to reiterate Henry's original question; How does one tell if their Carter has BCT? Is it (in)visible? Are the changer fingers different? Is the body different? Based on this (and previous) thread(s), it seems the only way to know is by the ...

It's worth it enough (for me) to carry this. My speaker "cabinet" has a built-in backup SS amp. ;-)

I haven't tried any SS amps that are more modern than the PV Transtube, so my preference may evolve one day.

Update on synchronizing B pedal pulls.

After spending some time playing with the "modified" B pedal pull, I have made two discoveries: 1) Moving the pull rod to the second to last hole (away from cross-shaft) seems to synchronize the B pedal raises best. Changing bell-crank holes is super easy on the CS. :D 2) The B pedal is to...

from a noise perspective, buffer amps (like most pre-amps) are best placed as close as possible to the source in the signal chain. Typically the signal/noise ratio is degraded at the end of a long cable.

I use a bunch of different amps (mostly BF Fender) depending on venue and transporation. Ideally it's separate amps for PSG and 6string, but usually I'm just using one. I'll use both amp channels if they are available but lately I have scaled down to a Blues Jr. sometimes. Only one channel. I'm grav...

Success!

Jon, That seems to work beautifully. I love it! My suspicion that it would increase needed force was confirmed when I could no longer actuate the B pedal cross shaft by pulling on the cranks by hand. I had to put the guitar together. The difference in pedal feel (force) however is almost imperceptib...

synchronizing B pedal pulls

Here's how I changed my RKL lower. The drawings might be useful if you decide to replace the stop plate. I miss having the first string raise. Might have to try fabricating a crank like Donny shows. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=203183& I am curious, Bob Sykes -- I am not at a...

I got a cheap keyboard gig bag. It's too big but will accommodate the large foam blocks I use to sandwich the guitar and separate the leg/pedal/rod bag from the PSG. Lately I've been putting a Rogue lap steel in there too, and it's all still lighter than my SD10 in the case :whoa: The non-padded bag...

Jon, I didn't think to check (listen critically) to, or adjust, the synchronization of those strings at the time. It's not "bad" enough to offend my (or my bandmates) ears, but now I'll obsess over it :-) Seriously this may be one of those subtle things that (collectively) somehow make my ...

Article-PSG - The most steampunk of all instruments

Interesting descriptions and condensed history of steel guitar written by a PSG novice/non-player. Probably nothing new to many on here, but I learned a few things. https://folkworks.org/pedal-steel-the-most-steampunk-of-instruments/ I didn't see this posted on SGF but it's hard (for me) to tell whi...

I use a Pro Guitar VP for PSG 90% of the time (using right angle plugs on the left) and like it jessfine. The accessible "on point" knob on the side is useful. I also like that I can power it along with my pedalboard from a single LiPo battery pack. I have read on this forum that the 9V pe...

Our soundman got this cafeteria tray stand at a flea market cheap. It's super light weight. He was putting mic/cable cases on it while packing/unpacking. I found another use for it during the gig. Works great for pedal board(s). Probably would work for steel cases. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/us...

Behringer Bi-Phase...errr Dual-Phase

Can't wait to get my hands on one and do a comparison with the original.

The new one seems to be made of unobtainium right now.
