Where do you play your blues?

When I play straight up blues in E I usually use the 3rd fret with the A pedal, and the 8th fret with my RKL lever. In other words, I use the typical E minor positions. Are there any other useful positions I'm missing? I'm not looking for specific licks. I'm looking for general positions where licks...

2 Stage Volume Pedal Ideas

As I try to learn how to use a volume pedal(VP) to increase sustain, I keep thinking there must be an easier way. From what I understand, when a VP is used properly you go through two stages. These numbers may very, but from 0 (no volume) to 50% is your playing range. Then, any thing from 50% to 100...

I admit I had never heard of Mr. Winston (I’m 32) until two weeks ago. I asked a local steel hero for some lessons and before we even start he wants me to buy Winnie Winston’s book. So… he’s still making an impact with the current generation.

Amps dangerous for electronics?

I have a very small practice space and sometimes I use a lap top to play practice tracks. How concerned should I be about setting the lap top next to my amp? That giant magnet can’t be good. Thinking along these lines, a lot of people put digital effect pedals on top of their amps. Is that a good id...

Finger Pick Sampeler

Are there any retailers out there that sell finger pick sample packs so you could try a bunch of different styles and sizes at once?

My local music store doesn't have a huge selection and it would be a pain to buy them one-at-a-time online.

Seat Belt - no joking

Jerry, about the seat belt thread - Sorry it turned into a joke before you got any serious answers. I don't think anyone meant harm. Before you use any kind of belt have you considered changing the height of the steel and/or seat? When I first started steel mine was about 1 1/2" too high. This ...

Well it was a really great show! A very tight band lead by an unbelievable voice. Mr. Loessberg hung around and talked to a few local steelers after the show. Seems like a real nice guy.

Yes, I am muting with my trailing fingers ever since I started lap steel years ago. But to my surprise when I got my first PSG last year my trailing fingers were no help on fret 12.

I was just wondering it this was one of the drawbacks of a beginning instrument.

Guess I'll have to live with it.

Fighting 12th fret harmonics

I can get a nice tone out of anywhere on the neck except the 12th fret. The natural harmonics of that position fight the picked tone resulting in a 'plunk' sound. After the plunk, what little sustain there is sounds like I'm playing through a chorus pedal. I'm playing a Carter Starter. I've played s...

Multi effects

I’ve been toying around with a Beringher Vamp 2 for a while. It’s OK, but I’d like something simpler. I really only need reverb, EQ and a tuner, not a modeler.

Are there any simple all in one boxes you guys would recommend for steel?

thanks

Thanks, but no pedal on this amp.

I forgot all about the problem (and this thread I started) until it happened again tonight. Oh well, guess I'll have someone look at it.

Thanks again.

I was actually at Lowes yesterday looking for some kind of tool box I could attach legs and a seat to and they had these in the isle. It's molded right in the plastic, "Do not sit on" but I sat down anyway and it's the perfect height. Don't know how long it would hold up. Plus I would prob...

True, but the iPad can only run one app at a time from what I understand, and there's a problem with flash video at the moment. That would be a deal breaker for me. That doesn't mean the Asus is the greatest thing in the world either... but it has a normal OS. I'm just excited that touchscreen gadge...

The model I mentioned above can go for under $500. Plus it can do e-mail and all the other tasks a little computer could do.

I wish I knew someone who had one. If it could handle a recording application like Garage Band I'm sold.

Might look cool mounted right to the steel too.

Amps reverb gets quiet

I just bought a used Kustom KMA 100 to do double duty as a steel and keyboard amp. It sounds OK. But last night the reverb was really quiet. I checked all the settings and cranked the effcts knob all the way up but it was still really quiet. Everything else (volume, EQ) worked fine. When I turned it...

Tablet PC instead of Paper Music

After seeing how inexpensive tablet PC’s have become, (like the Eee T91mt) I’ve been debating getting rid of my paper lead sheets and mounting a small tablet PC on my music stand. Any thoughts on advantages or drawbacks of going paperless like this? One plus, if a wi-fi connection is available I can...
