Buddy Charleton
Hey Pete... great idea to hear from some of Buddy's students over the years. I took lessons from him at the Oxon Hill music store for one summer in the mid-1970's. Some of the other guys going there at that time were Bruce Bouton, Tommy Hannum, and of course, you. A couple of things stand out in my ...

Tex Carmen
Jinx "Tex" Carmen was the first guy that really attracted me to the steel guitar. When I was about 10 years old, his "Hillbilly Hula" just killed me. Some people might make fun of his style, but it's so unusual, it's hard to duplicate. I tried to do that on my first album, Dobro,...

Mark, The problem with the old Ric lap steels is that they all have that staying in tune issue. They sound wonderful, but the bakelite is unstable I guess. They go out of tune as soon as you lay it on the heat of your lap, not to mention the heat of the stage lights. When I worked with Lylye Lovett,...

lap steel on Willin' on the Carolina Star CD
Mark and Howard... I used my Rickenbacher 6 string (from the 1930's) and Lowell George's Fender Twin Reverb on the cut of Willin' in the studio. The engineer, George Massenburg, owns Lowell's old amp, which was the same amp used on the original cut of Willin', engineered by Massenburg. We did the CD...

Wow... thanks guys. It's always surprising to me to hear how many people were learning something from me, while I was just trying to have fun. I feel like I'm still in the learning process and pray the flame stays lit.... and I'm still having too much fun! I really appreciate the kind words. Mike --...

Bobby,
My emails to you keep coming back, at both the comcast and bell south addresses. Do you still have the guitar?
Thanks, Mike

Yes, the first string D is lower than the second string E, in the C6 tuning. This sets up scale patterns that are easier on the right hand. In the C9 tuning, strings one and two are lower than string three. The notes on 1 and 2 are part of the V chord at the I chord fret... same as on the E9 pedal ...

Howard has it... Although I usually list it from low to high. G6... EGBDEGBD.
I also use C6: ACEGACED, and C9: CDEGCEBD on some other eight string recordings. I appreciate the interest... Thanks!

Bill, Thank you very much for the purchase of that great guitar, and for the kind words about the lesson. I enjoyed having you here and probably had more fun than you did... except for you ending up with that guitar! Just kidding, of course... there's plenty more where that one came from. Mike Auldr...

Hatton split cases
I just received my new Hatton split case for my Emmons D-10. This is a first-class product... beautifully made with black Fender Tolex outside and deep red velour inside. They're very reasonably priced and a must for anyone looking to "lighten the load" of their gear.... it will keep you o...

Hey Chip,
No, I never recorded with this steel, but it's got "the tone" for it. However, I'm also selling some dobros that I have recorded with. If anyone is interested, please drop me an email.

Gary,
thanks very much for posting the information on the Jenx Carman clip. His playing is what first attracted me to the steel guitar back about 1949 and it was a thrill to finally actually see him play that song. It made my day.
