When Bobby went to work for Box Car Willie in Branson, all Box would let him play was the steel guitar rtag and Bobby did not have a tape of that song. He recorded it in Tyler and put a different kind of tag on the end that he was very proud of. I loaned my copy of the tape to someone and they never...

I was once WA5DIY in the early 1960's. Operated 40 and 80 meters. Really had a great time but lost interest. I was excited to learn that if you ever passed code, it was now good for life. I chased a link to find out how to prove it and some company wanted $150 to research old files. Could I do that ...

Saw Bobby Garrett with Hank Thompson once, can't remember where, possibly Texas State Fair, and it just didn't get any better than that. Sweet, fast, wild or "Thompson", no one ever did it better than Big Bobby. IMHO. Buddy Emmons runs a very close second where ever you hear him play. He w...

Jeff - Glad to hear everything went well. I had the same operation last year, (2001), and it went just fine. Remember one thing. Do all the exercises they give you to do, as often as they want them done and you will be better off. I slacked off on mine and had to work at it longer. Lord bless you! M...

Paul, Bobby's music was indeed played at his service. I preached his Funeral service and it was a rough ride since I had known him from the time we were both about 16.He was also a member of my Church. He was a very active member and he was very dedicated to his God. He was ready for the journey. Bo...

I'm not really sure why Bobby Garrett's name never comes up when you talk about the people who pioneered the pedal steel guitar. Bobby was one of the first to use the third pedal, according to Walter Haynes, and he told me himself, that he got the first D-10 that Sho-Bud made. That means that he got...

Wayne -- never forget that Bobby loved you, as well. When he called me and told me what the Dr had told him about the cancer, he said -- I've got to call Wayne Yakes and tell him. And when they wanted to give radiation to his head, you were the first one he called. I miss him very much. I was his fr...

Hey Rick -- looks better than when you got into Town with it. It's the one JR kicked down the stairs O.K. and Bobby Told me out of his own mouth that when he picked up the guitar, he knocked JR down the same flight of stairs. Jim then came up the stairs or steps, and told him to get his stuff and ge...

Does anyone remember a part time steel player in California about this same time? Bobby Brewster played up and down the coast while in the US Navy in San Diego. Bobby played at various times with Tex Williams, Buddy Allen, Maddox Bros and Rose. None of those were full time, but mostly one night gig'...

My first lessons were from Raleigh Siglar at the old Liberty Hotel in Jacksonville, Texas. Mr. Siglar was aso teaching Bobby Garrett and Al Petty at the same time. He must have spent more time with them than he did me. Bobby and Al also gave me a few lessons. That didn't take too well either.

Question for 'Reece

Reece I was introduced to Dave Alexanders Western Swing by a station that plays that type music here in Tyler. I called Dave and got a couple of his CD's. Your work is outstanding and this band is really something. I'm listening to Milk Cow Blues as I write. What were you playing and what is your tu...

Bobby Garrett. While he was in shape, he was recognized as the number 2 steel player in the world, behind Jerry Byrd. Of course BEmmons went on to become the greatest player of modern times. But during his time, Garrett was extremely hard to beat.
