For what it's worth, last fall when I took the plunge I spoke to Al about this Brisco Bud. Hearing that I'd played lap-steel (of various flavours) for over 20 years he told me that the Bud was too much of a starter guitar and I'd want a more professional instrument. Eventually he found me a lovely u...

Thanks for all the tips, thanks folks! I was sitting with a skew, at the 15th, as suggested. I've raised my seat a bit higher, and lowered the pedals significantly... Lowering the pedals has made a *huge* difference for me, for ease of playing. It feels akin to playing a guitar with low action :) Is...

Fitting a PSG

Hi, About a month ago I got my first PSG -- a nice Carter (pro) S10. I've been playing a lot and find myself stiff and sore, and I'm not sure about the ergonomics... For a seat, am I correct that it should be tall enough that my knees are at 90 degrees? Likewise, should my arms be at 90 degrees? I'm...

On the Justice website (http://www.justicesteelguitars.com/) would this be the Jr or the Pro S10?

Thanks

I put on three knee levers from other stray parts. It’s in Extended Don Helms E6. I’m always https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2203/1589_B21CD5744FC34CB5847070B59175E29C_1.jpg Interesting. I am using this same tuning (the top 8, at least) on my lap steel and was about to install two palm lever...

All of my steel guitars, no matter how many strings, now have G B D F# A D strings - my 6-string lap tuning of choice. The 8-string non-pedal and 10-string pedal steels all add to that. I've been learning 8 string C6, but have always been a fan of dobro-G and open-D... I had never considered combin...

Somewhat related, playing with 8-string high-g C6 (ACEGaceg), what strings would you target for those 'pedal'-sounding bends?
I find I tend to raise the E's up to F, and occasionally the G's to A (tho that's hard on string 1...)

Am I missing something cool?

I'm not entirely sure I understand, but are you looking to increase the break angle? If so, you need a higher nut, or more peghead angle.
If this weren't a prototype unit, I'd suggest you scarf a new peghead on...

Thanks for the thoughts, Bill. Don't worry, I'm not planning to switch to the dark side anytime soon :) But, I'm inquisitive and curious why exactly that is... What is it about a pedal steel that makes it inherently sound different -- or impossible to sound "very similar"? If you built a p...

Re: 112 settings

Thanks, Dale!
Those settings are remarkably similar to what I've settled on, actually.
Do you happen to know if that's what he uses for lap, or pedal, or both?

Thanks for the insights, David -- that's maybe what I'm hearing... I feel like it's a bit more of a growl or something that normally I'd attribute to scale length, but that argument fails when the scale is the same :) A compressor of some sort might be just the ticket -- i have some gear I'll play a...

Pedal-steel 'sound' on a Nashville 112

Hi, I play a home-built 8-string lap, a sort of "stringmaster" clone (24.5" scale, with this 'stringmaster style' pickup: http://www.vintagevibeguitars.com/pickup_lap.html) I recently got a peavey Nashville 112 amp. I can get a nice tone for most of my playing, but a few tunes I want ...

How about making your own? I've built and fitted a fair few, check the attached pics. Most parts off the shelf at the hardware store Tony, I'm really impressed! I'm building a lap steel right now and was planning to try to build some kind of bender for it eventually. Would you be able to share any ...

Disadvantages to equal-spaced strings (nut and bridge)

Hi guys! I'm building a new 8-string lap steel and I've been thinking about going with equally spaced strings (3/8") at both the nut and bridge. On both my old bakelite rick and my dobro the spacing is wider at the bridge than the nut. Is that done for a reason, or just tradition? It seems equa...

Paul Beard Signature Goldtone 8 String Resophonic Guitar

It's finally time to sell my Goldtone Beard 8-string reso... Just in time for Christmas :) I had lots of fun with it -- it's a *great* sounding guitar -- but my musical direction changed and I need to pursue the 6-string for a while. https://www.beardguitars.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&am...

Hi... Any idea how old it is?
Has it had any recent tune-ups, etc?

Does it come with a case?
Strap? (I just ask because I see it on the headstock in the photo..)

Also, do you have any sound clips?

A couple years back Mark made me a stand for my bakelite. Great stand! I *believe* Mark went even further and built me one that was close to 30 degrees, as my main motivation was to play while standing so the audience could see what I'm doing (to me there's not much showmanship sitting in a corner l...

Sigh, now I'm thinking it might be fun to shift everything down a string, get rid of the low E and add a high G at the top, instead... so, low to high GBDEGBDG It might be an interesting drone (banjo) type thing... Hah, good one Howard :) So far having the E in the middle doesn't bother me -- I kinda like it, as I got pretty used to having strings one full tone apart in the other tuning, and besides, I don't mind adding a bit of a swing sound in there. I have been toying with raising the low E to an F, to get ...
