New all-steel record out!

Hey y’all my new record “Pink Pedal Steel” is finally out! All the sounds and effects were made on my 2002 Tom Baker-built Sierra Session U12 and recorded on a cranky ancient MacBook running Logic 9. Hope y’all enjoy! https://sweetgary.bandcamp.com/album/pink-pedal-steel https://open.spotify.com/art...

After many years of JI, I went back to ET on my U12 and have been liking it for most of the gigs I play right now. Once I got my ear broken into it it seems to allow for more possibilities across the instrument.. but I’ve started to tweak certain changes I use a lot so we’ll see how long it lasts lo...

Universal players: which lever flats your e’s?

Curious about this for sure and apologies if it’s been covered ad nauseam before, I searched etc... I have always had the change on LKR but have been wondering about RKL (which currently flats B’s) I don’t tend to use the change-lok and have a one-big-tuning approach. ‘03 Sierra session u12 Uni-peep...

Hell yeah, great tones too! I sent you an email but just In case you didn’t see, are you on Instagram? I have a page (@austinsteelguitarclub) that I post mostly about local steel players and their gigs but I’d love to post about your record and hopefully draw a few folks to your bandcamp. Is that co...

Walrus Audio Monument Tremolo

Anyone tried this pedal out on steel? My amp doesn’t have trem and I really like it as an occasional sound option for gigs where I’m fronting the band and singing. I have used the Empress Trem which is amazing tonally but has a large foot print and I’d like to try something else that also has a tap ...

Here’s another vote for the Neunaber Wet. Very transparent to deeply trippy vibes and a very natural response. Also liked the mxr m300 for more variety of verbs… For some reason I never have bonded with the Strymon verbs though I really love the way they sound on other peoples rigs.

Hey Bill congrats on that badass Sierra, what tuning are you playing and what is the idea of leaving strings off? (Forgive my ignorance I’m a pedals guy who is nursing a rapidly growing fascination with the non-pedals world)

I’m curious if there really is a difference in tone between the Hilton and Telonics pedals? I used a Hilton for a long time but have been using an Omni (set to passive) for the last few years.

I think you can for sure! My story is the opposite: learned to play by pick blocking and started learning palming blocking during the first Covid lockdown. It’s taken awhile to soak in especially at gigs but lately it’s been sounding much better. I had always mistakenly thought you could only do one...

Dream time harmonics!

Hi y’all after a super busy few months and a bad bout with the ole covid, I’m back to finishing mixing a collection of pedal steel music I’ve made over the last year. Here’s a teaser exploration in harmonics!

I got one mid 2020 when I was doing so much playing with headphones thinking it would be a direct practice aid. And then I cut my first tracks on it… big love for this thing. It’s nice to not have to mess around with mics in my acoustically-challenged space and bother my wife with endless takes. I h...
