Jazzman

Al's steel on PPL's Jazzman has (IMO) withstood the test of time. I listen to that album regularly. Contrarian that I am, Amie is not my favorite song on the Bustin Out album. It isn't overrated but it is overplayed.

Tuning Pegs on a Sho-Bud "Super Pro"

Last night when I was tuning my Sho-Bud, I noticed that there was free play in some of the tuning pegs. They would turn approx. 1/8" before the gear would turn. I tightened the screw on the top and that seemed to help. My questions is how much should I tighten these screws? I just went "fi...

Dan,

With all respect to Chris & his bass, crank up the steel. His uncle Frank always seems to have his steel mixed pretty well for those jams down at the VFW Watertown, MA.

Jim

One of these weeks when my work schedule permits, I'll be out to hear you play.

Lo and behold, when I was working on the pedal set up I discovered screw holes right where a knee lever should be. So, my guess is that sometime before I got this thing somebody removed the knee lever. This is hardly worth fixing, but I am having a good time trying to get it back in to some sort of ...

Ray, The friend I'm giving it to has played C&W music for probably 40 years. He plays guitar, banjo & whatever and said he always wanted to mess around with a PSG. So I have this old thing sitting in the basement, and I think why not fix it up a little bit and he can have some fun with it. T...

Old Junker

Well I started working on this thing tonight. Just trying to get the strings tuned up. It turns out that the wood body has a crack almost the entire length of the guitar. As I tuned the strings the crack opened up with the added tension. Then the plastic tuners started to crack when I was bringing t...

That PSG looked like it had some hard miles on it. It is his road guitar, and he thought that it had gotten banged around as checked baggage on a recent flight. He said it was going in for repair today after he gets to Nashville. One of the tuners was damaged.

Rusty Young - with pictures

I completely enjoyed Poco's performance tonight. It was a fine show from beginning to end. Rusty Young is now the front man and he does a fantastic job. He plays guitar, mandolin, Dobro & PSG. Tonight he played the Pedal Steel on two songs and the dobro on a couple others including Grand Junctio...

I'll keep you posted on how the show is and if he plays any pedal steel. Sure hope he does, it would be a disappointment if he doesn't. It wouldn't seem like
Poco with out that signature sound of the steel.

The really odd thing about this guitar was there was no mechanism for attaching the legs. They are just aluminum tubes. The bottom of the tubes had the rubber caps, and there were rubber caps screwed to the bottom corners of the guitar that I could slip the legs into. This obviously did not make thi...

Maybe I'll call it the Little Junkster. Actually going to clean it up reset the pedals (as well as possible) and give it to a friend. After this, he may never speak to me again, but that is the price you pay sometimes.

Kit or Homemade PSG ???

Here are some pictures of a junker I've had laying around forever. Three pedals, no knee levers... It was given to me about 30 years ago. The legs were not attached, I made the brackets to hold the legs, but they don't work very well. Information or comments about this are welcome http://bb.steelgui...

That sounds like a good find Dan. Are the set screws slotted or are they Allen screws? If they are Allen screws you might be able to use an Easy Out screw extractor. If it requires drilling a machine shop is probably your safest method to handle this. Maybe there is a machine shop at UNH that could ...

The sound of the steel got me hooked back in the 1970's. Bobby Black, Buddy Cage & John David Call. I couldn't afford a steel back then so I had to play Air Steel along with my records. So now I have a Sho-Bud and I am proceeding with my journey of learning to play a real pedal steel.

I think that this would be a fantastic opportunity. I have not visited Nashville and it has been high on my list of places I want to see and experience. Something like this would be the icing on the cake. I've looked at your web site and from what I've seen there, your program is a well conceived me...

I saw them many times over the years at the Berkshire Mtn Blugrass/Winterhawk/Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in upstate New York. Some of the finest musicians around. Specialty Printers

It looks like they got eaten up in the massive printing industry consolidation of the 1980's
& 1990"s. I think that they were rolled into Mack Printing, which is now part of Cadmus Communication Corp. What kind of printing are you interested in?

You should contact Marcia at the Rhode Island Steel Guitar Association. She could probably put you in touch with someone that could give you instructions.

Here is their website. It lists several contacts.

I sure do remember her. They used to play her records on CKBY out of Ottawa (if I remember correctly) and I could pick up that station in Potsdam, NY. Once I heard her voice I was hooked, I have all her albums (LP's) including her later work with Quartet. Very sad that she died so young. Her work wi...

Al Perkins-Last of the Red Hot Burritos

I was listening to the Flying Burrito Brothers - Last of The Red Hot Burritos on my way in to work tonight, and I was just amazed with the PSG solos that Al did on the first three songs in that live recording. I've listened to that album hundreds of times and his steel playing never ceases to thrill...
