Thanks for the reply. Do you know where someone might get parts for this? Particularly tuners. Unfortunately this is the only photo I have. Any idea of the value? The person with the guitar has asked me if I can fix the tuners for him. I will try to get some more photos.

Double 8 lap steel

A friend of mine picked up a double 8 string lap steel with no identification on it. Does anyone happen to know what it is and what value it might have?
Thanks,
Bernie

Don. If the tubes don't seem to be acting up you could probably forego that change especially if they are original RCA tubes which are highly desireable. As for the date of the amp, if it does not have a master volume it is somewhere between a 68 and 72. These amps have the same circuitry as the Bla...

Cap job.

Ballpark I would say the caps are about $50 if you use good ones and replace them all. I would recommend Sprague Atoms. It would take a good tech a couple of hours. If you do it your self be careful there's enough voltage on the caps that could kill you. You have to drain the current off. I would al...

71 Twin Reverb

The white stuff leaking out of the cap is probably dielectric. This indicates that the amp needs a cap job. Probably all of the electrolytic caps need to be replaced. Not a cheap job but well worth it for this amp. I also noticed that the picture of the chassis is a blackface while the amp is a silv...

Synchronizing my B pedal pull

I am having trouble with my B pedal pull from G# to A on strings 3 and 6. String 3 pulls nice and even from G# to A after a little slack but string 6 doesn't engage until the pedal is almost completely down. I've tried moving it to another hole in the bell crank; changing the angle of the bell crank...

MSA still available

Hi Rich. Is this guitar still available? I live in Roseville and can come down and take a look at it.

I had to say something , Tom is the best.

I don't play my steel out very much since I'm playing guitar in a blues band now but when I found Tom he was the biggest help to me and I was flabbergasted by the honest way he conducts business and how helpfull he was. He was the only person who could find me some teflon washers that go on MSA chan...

A chromatic tuner. Did anybody mention that or I guess it's assumed. I use an old korg, don't know the model off hand but I have always tuned straight up 440 and never even thought about whether it was JI or ET. Never knew there was a difference until I joined this forum. I do tune my 6 string to th...

Hi Mickey, I use a Voodoo labs Sparkle Drive. I used it for guitar and I think it works fine for steel as well. Its basically a TS808 Tube Screamer clone BUT it has a fourth knob which allows you to dial in how much clean sound or how much dirty sound you want. If you turn the gain all the way down ...

I have one!

Since I have never played anything but an MSA I did not feel qualified to make a "guess" as to which guitar was which. However in reading other posts it kind of disturbed me that some people seem to think that the old MSA's are second rate and don't compare to Emmons p/p or other guitars t...

It definitely improved the tone. The original single coil was getting a little noisy is the main reason I did it but I was very impressed with the E-66 and think it sounds much better. I think a humbucker also sustains more, which is also true in regular six string guitars. You may find it a little ...

E-66 in '74 MSA

Hi David and Larry,
I did the same thing with my 74 MSA S-12. I used a router and spray painted the inside. You can hardly tell except in the sound. You won't regret it. Here's a picture.

Dave Mudgett, I understand what NOS tubes are and by definition of course they are not being produced today. But one day there will be no more. If you can find them , and afford them, great. However the JJ tubes are fantastic tubes and are only 35$ for a matched pair of 6L6's. To me it's not worth s...

Bill, too bad the K series is obsolete but , as I said mine came from the factory stock with the K-120's. If you can find a used one with the K series I think you would like them. To my ear I like the old K series better.

Jim Sliff, In regards to your comment about JBL speakers not being high powered I am not under any mis-conception about the power rating. I should have been more specific about my particular case. My twin came stock from the factory with K-120 12" JBL speakers. NOT the D-120's that everyone kee...

Bill, If you get an old twin it should be an early 70's Silverface twin with JBL speakers. From what I have read about them they did some circuitry changes when CBS took over Fender that changed to Silverface to make the amps sound cleaner. That's one of the reasons gutitar players like the Blackfac...

Kenny, I have a 74 MSA Classic that cme with the stock single coil pickup. I changed to a George L E66 pickup. Yes I had to slightly modify the pickup cavity by routing it out a little bit but you can hardly tell. The George L sounds fantastic and was well worth the modification. Also a lot cheaper ...

Bill, I have 2 fender amps that I think are the best of both worlds. The first one is a 1973 Fender Silverface twin, 100 watts with 2 K-120 JBL's. I recently re-tubed it and changed out all the electrolytic caps. It is clean as a whistle and very hard to break up, even cranked. I use it for my steel...

Kevin, I can see you are a master of the obvious. I said in the very beginning of my reply that I could not make a comment on the inherent tone of Sho-buds or Emmons. However I do know a little about tone since I have been playing guitar for over 40 years. You missed the point of my discussion. I wa...

I haven't read all of the replies on this topic but I have seen a couple of things regarding tonewoods versus plywood and some very opinionated, highly biased, replies about the supposedly "Best" tone. My opinion is that there is no such thing. I have a 70's MSA that I think has wonderful ...

I use a korg AT-2 analog chromatic tuner. I do not like the digital ones at all. It's an older one but has worked flawlessly for years. I have been using it at 440. I just looked in my Scotties Anthology book which lists the tempered tuning with A set at 438.5. I can't set half frequencies but I res...

Hi Donny, Thanks for the response. When I cleaned my changer it was out of the guitar and completely diassembled.
