Picked up a Magnatone Troubadour S8 last week. Harmonics/chimes are nearly effortless on this thing. They just kind of happen. I’m still relatively new to non-pedal guitars, but i find that my overall playing, including palm harmonics/chimes are better on lap guitars than console guitars. This new M...

I find the trapezoid tone to be a bit darker, more “open”, has some air to it as opposed to my stringmasters which sound more compressed. Also, harmonic chimes seem to ring better on my trapezoids, unless I’m playing differently and I’m just not aware of it. Wonder if it has anything to do w...

I think Nic hit the nail on the head, my fender is a “brighter” tone, and my Maggie MOTS is darker. When I hit a harmonic on the Magnatone the entire guitar “sings”, I can feel the vibration. It rings on the fender, just not like it does on that little magnatone. I haven’t experimented wit...

Hawaiian Tone on a Fender Deluxe 6

I have a 50’s Fender Deluxe 6 and I’m having trouble finding the “sweet spot” in the pickup blend for Hawaiian tone. I realize that a an earlier model with trapezoids is probably the better option, but I’m looking to get the most out of this guitar as I learn. The high end either sounds to...

Vintage kluson tuner button replacement

Replacing kluson tuner buttons on my Iolana. I have the cream colored replacements from stew Mac and have found two methods of replacement via online search: one using heat (solder iron or heat gun) and one using a drill and glue. I don’t see how the shaft would grip the tuner without heat, so Iâ€...

Thanks for the info, I can run a C6th 15-36 set for the A tuning, I've never used an E tuning on a lap steel.

Looks like the "E" set is 13-56 from GHS, both tunings have an E on the first string...is the 13 too light? Don't see why I shouldn't use a 15.

Jerry Byrd course questions

I'm going to take the plunge and order it, I have a few questions for those that have taken the course before I buy. How much of the course can I complete on a 6 string tuning? I know Jerry used a 7 string quite a bit, and most of the tab that I have seen for his pieces is written for 8 string tunin...

Early 70's classic, E-66 made the guitar come alive...high end to spare, if I had to peel paint, I could. I'm not sure why people say these are "dark" or "muddy" sounding guitars. The super sustain didn't sound "bad", but did not have the clarity that the E-66 has, and,...

Not sure where to put this thread...anyone ever own a sho-bud acoustic guitar from the 70's? How are they? My first steel amp was a loaner 212HD with JBL's in a road case...it was good for guitar, and great for steel, just waaaay too heavy. That was when I was in my early 20's, I had the 212HD with JBL's, a double 10 60's Blanton (almost as heavy as the amp!), and a mid 70's boat anchor telecaster...that...

Didn't Pete Drake play on the Monkees "Listen to the Band"? I don't know of very many R&R tunes that had steel that were also popular on the charts.... Offhand, besides the ones you mentioned, these were Billboard Hot 100 hits of a more rock-n-roll bent that featured some steel: "...
