John-that G tuning is very close to classic Cajun steel. You could use pedals to give you a C out of that,too.
For non pedal,a G6 is what I use on 8 string-[lo EGBDEGBD hi ] also C6 is popular or a D7 [DF#ACDF#AD] could be cool if you are focusing on D tuning.

I find the Fender clip-on tuners to be the best. They are small,bright display,long battery life. I have a keyless GFI and Williams,to I tried clipping it to the body on my side of the steel and it works just fine.

I bought an Aura from Beard a couple months ago and have used it a few different ways- 1] in 'Transducer'effects loop of Fishman Pocket Blender which handles an old Lawrence acoustic pickup.I have a Beard/Fishman under-cone pickup going thru the 'mic' channel.
