I'm very happy with the stereo tape delay simulator built into the Fender Cybertwin head that I use. It's better than the standalone pedals that I've heard so far, but I haven't tried to keep up with the very latest and greatest. I find that it replaces both delay and chorus and sounds much nicer th...

I was able to catch a couple of hours in the late afternoon and by happy coincidence my dad was in town and I was able to bring him. Lots of interesting stuff, but my favorite was Ernie. He played exactly the style of music my dad and I like to play together and did an extremely good job at it. I ho...

Just a reply from the perspective of someone who's had their Carter Starter for about a year now, and had some fun with it but not practiced nearly as much as I'd need to if I was trying to be a "real" steel player: If a person wants to be a "real" steel player, it seems to me li...

I like the topic, but my personal opinion is that it's two separate things. Yes, I think the country is becoming more urban/suburban, and yes, I think that traditional sounding country isn't played much by the younger generation. I'm not sure the two are directly connected, though. I think when peop...

I was in the 101st. I like riding in helicopters. Having said that I would not let my child ride in an Army helicopter no matter how lovingly restored and expertly piloted. I say this not to be a jerk, but just to encourage people to take the risk seriously, whatever their decision might be.

Well, we're getting closer now so I thought I'd bring this back from the dead before I nail everything down. I've gotten a couple responses and will be in contact with those who've already responded soon. I know a little more now, it will be on Saturday night the 4th of July, probably starting about...

I'm a beginner steel player, but an experiences guitar sound nut who appreciates the sound of steel. I really like my cybertwin head, but need more bass than I'm currently getting from a pair of old twin reverb 12s in wedge monitor cabinets. I love the stereo tape delay in the amp, and the ease of s...

I think there are music people and there are lyrics people. The guys who think Joel sucks and Springsteen rules are lyrics people, IMO. Same tradeoff happened in the early 90s between the hair bands and the grunge bands. I'm a music person. I'll take well crafted, well played melodies, rhythms, and ...

I realize this is getting beaten to death on the radio as I type, and taste is a personal thing, but I like Jamey Johnson and I think that "In Color" is pretty close to a modern classic. I admit the the chord sequence is closer to rock & roll, though...the song makes me want to segue i...

There are a few people in this world that should be fired, but I've found that mostly it's because the band isn't set up in a manner conducive to playing softly. People (and drummers) need to be able to hear a certain mix to be able to play well, and "loud" drummers are usually playing tha...

Yeah, the more I think about it, I realize the original statement was correct...if Marsalis says it's jazz, then it's jazz. My problem is that I don't trust him to say which things AREN'T jazz.

Speaking of the Dixie Dregs, Rod Morganstein(?) is still playing amazing stuff with Winger (which I know probably won't score any points with anyone here :-)). I saw them live fairly recently and Rod blew me away. Is it just me, or is Eric Johnson starting to look like Mr. Burns from "The Simps...

Wynton Marsalis is a great player, but you should only listen to his definitions of what is and isn't jazz if you want the most rigid definition possible. The guy is a jazz Nazi, IMO. I've been in the same room with him and found him to be completely unwilling to listen to anything that didn't fit h...

Anybody live out in the sticks N of St. Louis/W of Chicago?

I've got a family reunion in the Keokuk IA/Nauvoo IL area around next 4th of July that I'll need to rent a PA for and I'm also short a musician. I'm still not sure exactly which night (sometime between the 1st and the 4th), and this is by no means a pro gig...just family fun. But, if there was someb...

Oh, OK, I get it :-). Glad you're doing the gig. Mike grew up in Pennsylvania and didn't "sound southern" at all when I played with him. When I hear him on the phone now, he sounds like he grew up in Tennessee to my ear :-). Thanks for saying hi.

I use a bit of both at the same time. I gotta put in a plug here for what's probably the best feature on the Fender Cybertwin, which is the tape delay simulator. Crank up the wow/flutter on it, and turn down the treble on the echoes and I think it sounds really good with a bit of Fender reverb on to...

I had to look it up to see whether the 822 had the same kind of 5-pin XLR as the 825, but I guess not. Appears that it's a standard XLR connector but instead of a single balanced signal it's a got dual unbalanced signals with a common ground. Shouldn't be hard to make an XLR -> (2)1/4" cable us...

I see you're from Virginia, so this won't surprise you, but anybody coming from a dry climate like the Rocky Mountains will probably hate the summers if you have to work outside at all.
