Thanks for the feedback. I also looked at the video for the MTV Unplugged version of this song and it looked like Ben played on Dobro. It might have been pedal steel on other recordings but I was trying to figure out what tuning is was using on non pedal steel. I will try it out in C6 next.

Harvest Moon - Ben Keith - Lap steel?

Hello folks, newbie. I was trying to learn the steel parts for Neil Young's Harvest Moon. From the videos I have seen, Ben Keith is either playing a lapsteel or Dorbro. Was wondering what key he would be playing in. I have the main riff played in standard tuning on my lap steel but not sure that is ...

For me it was 1972, Neil Young's Harvest album. Ben Keith playing on Old Man and Out on the Weekend.

It was re-inforced by Rusty Young / Poco - Bad Weather.

Took me 36 years to eventually get a steel, hope it doesnt take too many be for I can actually play something well.

Wow, thanks for all the responses on this. I never cease to learn something here. I am glad I held off on an impulse to buy a used EB bol pedal and will take a little more time in making my decision.

Thanks Doug, being new to PSG I was hoping that the generated tabs would help me with playing. Looks like I need to get better with my new instrument first.

Volume Pedal question

Hello folks, I am still a newbie on the PSG, I would like to know if there is any special about a volume pedal for PSG vs for guitar. I have been looking and see alot on ebay very inexpensive (ernie ball), but the ones that specifically mention PSG (goodrich) seem much more expensive. Is the a diffe...

Tabl Edit Help

I recently downloaded a demo version of TablEdit (v2.65) to see if it would help me transcribe a piece of music to the appropriate PSG tab. I am finding that for two notes in unison, it is tabbing notes at different fret positions which would be impossible to play in unison. Is there an option to he...

Don - I agree, I lurked herfe for awhile until I was sure I was ready to tackle the PSG. Then I joined the forum and it has been the best source of information. Through this forum in the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to meet some fine people, and quite a few from Jersey (me too!) So any...

The first thing I show them is the basic string 8, string six and pedal, string five and pedal. Thats the instantly recognizable steel hook. Their eyes light up! They are doing something they identify as steel guitar music. THEN, I explain WHY it works. If you can get someone doing something to ent...

Does anyone know if Ben has ever been interviewed? I would imagine he would have a lot of insight given the folks he's worked with and the styles of music he played. But there seems to be very little information about him.
What gear does he use?
What tunings etc?

Glad to see some folks with similiar taste. I have been a long time Neil fan, the reason I started to learn guitar when I was 9. I have every video, cd, record Neil ever played on. I agree the Harvest DVD is outstanding. Ben was instrumental in getting Neil to go to Nashville to record the Prarrie W...
