Thanks for the comment, Larry. I know it's just a matter of time before these beautiful guitars sell. I'm not too worried about it because I'm happy to have both of them, especially the ZB. I just happened to come across a deal on an Emmons Original that I would have been a fool to pass up, and now ...

Thanks for the comment, Larry. Lots of interest in both guitars and a few offers, but as of now they are still available.

FS: '68 D10 Scranton ZB and D10 Carter

First up is a 1968 ZB that I bought here on the forum about five or six years ago. This guitar was built for Hall of Famer Bobby Garrett and was the guitar he used on a few Hank Thompson recordings from that era. This is a Zane Beck era guitar, and it has the original fretboards with his signature. ...

GFI d10 keyless wood mica

GFIs are peculiar looking guitars, but this dark wood color works for me. I'd really like to get a more modern guitar, and this is about as modern as it gets. Anybody have one they are looking to sell?

Lots of good advice here. I had an audiologist test my hearing and fit me for plugs about five years ago. The problem that I have with ear plugs is that no matter how good they are, you will never hear low and high frequencies in the same proportions as you would without the plugs. Cheap plugs cut h...

Dan, when you say that the Franklin has "that sound", it seems that you are implying that the Desert Rose doesn't. I assume you are referring to an old Emmons when you say "that sound", so what would you compare the DR tone to? From what I understand it might be closer to a Sho-B...

I have been scheming to buy a Desert Rose for a while now. I'd like to have something modern in addition to my old ZB. Seems like the DR would be perfect, but there is not a lot of info out there. Glad to see this thread, and I hope to learn more about the tone and construction of these guitars. Can...

Central Michigan?

I am moving up to Alma, MI in the fall, and I am wondering where to go and who to look for in Central Michigan. Any good honky tonk acts to check out? Steel players? Good music in general? I'm guessing that the Lansing area would have the most to offer, but any tips from those of you who live in or ...

PSA: '75 Vibrosonic on The Gear Page

I have no relation at all to the seller, but I thought I'd pass this along:

You may need to subscribe to see the listing, but this guy is selling a Vibrosonic for $750 OBO. Great price on a great amp for steel and tele.

Roger, I agree with you 100%. One would be naive to think that the Derby name was only a reference to the Kentucky Derby and not to the Emmons guitar that inspired the Derby's design. The dual meaning is what makes it such a clever brand name. If the Derby were to use a thoroughbred in the logo alon...

Thanks for the insight, Ray. It seems that in those days it was understood that this was the way to play, and that tradition has indeed faded. Another interesting example is the way that the Buckaroos' studio recordings differed from the live recordings. In the studio Don and Tom Brumley traded comp...

Great advice Sonny. If there are bass and drums and the singer is strumming guitar, then that should be enough to "draw the picture" and no other chord filler should be necessary. Other instrumentalists like pedal steel, tele, fiddle, piano, etc. can take turns "adding the color"...

I totally agree with Mark. It depends on the style. If it's classic country/ honky tonk, the tradition is for one player to accompany the singer at a time. I have an Ernest Tubb record that is a perfect example of this. In addition to ET, bass, and drums, the band also consists of steel, fiddle, ele...

I would like to respectfully disagree that we are luckier today because of all the solo steel guitar records that are available. I prefer to listen to steel players accompany a good singer like Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens, etc. I tend to find solo steel records a bit tedious, but I love the ingenious w...

I've tried George L's, Lava Cable ELC, and your run of the mill GC cables. In my experience, length is definitely the most important factor in the effect of the cable on tone. The George L's that I have are solderless, and I've decided never to take them out of the house. Too much trouble. You can b...

Clyde, I think your comment is right on the money. I was using the word "definitive" more in the sense of defining a player's style, but your interpretation is very insightful. I think it is important for a player to be able to play "Together Again" like Tom Brumley if asked by a...
