Ok, it's practice, but: Do a swell from silent to full on open, then the same swell with RKR engaged, ditto with RKL. I do that with chromatic runs on the lower strings with both knees when I need to drill independence beteween ankles and knees. BTW I have a Goodrich low profile, great VP.

Best guitar amp I ever had was a silverface pro reverb. Just the right amount of breakup in a typical room. Schaller made vps with a rack and pinion mechanism. I had one but wasn't crazy about the feel.

TC unitune. I tune ET, anything beyond that I do by ear so I don't used sweetened settings (even though I've got a stroboflip). It's very accurate and easy to use. I clip it to a leg. (The right leg fwiw but I don't think it matters.) Works great in a loud setting.

Pete Drake did the studio version of Loretta Lynn's "Fist City" but there's a live TV version with Hal Rugg that is incredibly creative. Google "Fist City" and you'll find it.

I always thought Sneaky Pete's parts on the choruses of Joni Mitchell's "California" had a descending Shepard tone-like quality, especially the second chorus right about 3:00 studio version.

After "Hey Joe", string together "Jumpin Jack Flash", "let's do the time warp again" and maybe a Freebird or two to fill in the cracks and you are there. It won't be pretty, though.

Try turning the amp up and keeping the vp low.

Steel guitar got popular in the C&W world through its jazzy role in Western Swing bands. Maybe it's losing popularity (if it is) because it's not jazzy enough.

When was the last hit or popular band with a guitar playing minor pentatonic licks through a distortion pedal? Gotta be at least 40 years ago. Ah, those were the days.

I got one a few years ago after throwing my back out taking my steel out of the case for a rehearsal. Beautiful sounding instruments & lots of fun. Tip: learn the notes, there aren't that many.
