What great stories. My condolences to the Brumley family and all his friends and fans. When I was 15 and saw my first Desert Rose Band show, it was the first time I'd seen a live country music act after growing up and watching all the greats on television. My grandparents from Sicily loved Buck Owen...

Hi Dave. I'm in Palm Beach County. I'll remember you when I buy my first PSG (hopefully this year) and maybe we can do a whole afternoon lesson to get me started. I'm currently in a bluegrass band but we're not gigging yet. I'm ready on banjo and lead guitar, our fiddle player is ready, but the rhyt...

It's also an interesting reminder of how much Red Rhodes played on "Notorious Byrd Brothers" I'd recommend getting a clean copy of the original lp or a reissue from Sundazed Record and listening on a good record player. The cd just doesn't capture how beautiful that album is. Gary Usher t...

I suggest you go for a 12 Universal or extended E9. Look up the article in the forum archives by Maurice Andersen " Steel Guitar, Back to the Future" That's a great article and gives me a lot to think about. Thanks guys.. I'm glad I'm not totally off in thinking a double neck might be a w...

Anyone start out on a doubleneck?

I'm going to look into getting my first PSG when the economy gets better. It will be my third instrument after six string guitar and banjo, and I know enough theory to play some jazz. I don't know know if I should learn E9 or C6 tuning first or both. I like both 60s country rock and 40s western swin...

Clarence piqued my interest in guitar after I found old Byrds albums, mainly Untitled. His whole career still fascinates me, but my interest in flatpicking has grown after studying his work in that realm. Some of my favorite shows that have survived on tape are the reformed Kentucky Colonels and Whi...

As I understand the Buckaroos' history, Buck taught Don how to play lead guitar and handed those duties over to him when he got good enough. I think Don was just a fiddle player when they met. Buck was probably a very impressive picker in his early days but let those skills lapse somewhat. He's doin...

WOW! This was the 70's I think. How moronic? How feeble? How futile? How absurd? 1967. They never took Emery or his narrow mind seriously.. just an old character. It was either Roger McGuinn or Chris Hillman who was asked years later by Emory how Gram Parsons was and all they could say was "st...

....i heard jaydee quit the desert rose band cause hillman was a jerk with all the money and jaydee could barely afford to gig. Don't believe everything you read. Pre-Garth, you didn't have to sell a ton of records to get chart success. That's why the DRB put out such high quality albums and still ...

He's on the right track for the Jimmy Bryant sound: clean tone, no string bending, all picked notes and some pull-offs. No gimmicks, just good picking. Great job kid! All he needs now is a Fender single coil PU guitar. ;-) Agreed. That was great! I'd love to see the younger musicians get into some ...

Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen have been making wondering records for decades and don't get a fraction of the buzz. Both were way ahead of Gram in country music as they played bluegrass in the early 60s, as did a lot of their peers in country rock. So I can understand how annoying all this "Gr...

Loved it! :D I've got to pick up the album. Jim Lauderdale has such an authentically country voice.. like the old days, and works with the best country musicians ever. IMHO

Also, the fourth FBB record with Al Perkins has been reissued by Sierra Records.

I'd say the only way you can write about it with authority it to listen first. If you can get one of these boxed set linked below, you'll hear examples of the earliest recorded country music starting in the mid 1920s and going through the early 50s. I found it pretty fascinating. It's easy to debate...
